Mind the gap! While gender equality has come on in leaps and bounds over the past 50 years, and the Equal Pay Act was amended in 1984 to introduce equal pay for work of equal value across both genders, when it comes to pay rates there’s still an imbalance. Will the gap be closed anytime soon? Opinion differs. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS, www. ons.gov.uk), in 2011 the difference between the average salaries of men and women had fallen to less than 10% for the first time ever. At the current trajectory, that would mean that the average woman will earn £14.09 an hour in 2020 compared to £14.06 for the average man. But a survey carried out by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) in 2010 concluded that it might not be until 2067 that equal pay is a reality, with the average UK salary for a male manager currently £10,031 more than his female counterpart. Male pay still surpasses female pay by as much as 24% at a senior level. The gap also persists at junior level. Anna Bird, acting chief executive of The Fawcett Society (www.fawcettsociety.org.uk), which campaigns for equality between men and women, believes that the gap is still palpable. ‘More than 40 years after the Dagenham machinists went on strike at the Ford car plant, in a move that triggered the Equal Pay Act, women can still expect to earn much less than their male counterparts,’ she says. Social evolution: maternity leave It will come as no surprise that women’s positions in the workforce are inextricably connected to childcare provisions and maternity leave. After all, family has been one of the defining factors – if not the most significant one – in the discrepancy between male and female employees. The last ten years have been pivotal in the evolution of parental leave. The UK is rated as one of the most expensive countries in the world in terms of childcare, according to the OECD’s report ‘Doing Better for Families’ (www.oecd.org) BOARDROOMS OF THE FFUT URE THE UT URE Although equality still xxx xxx improve, it’s heading in the right direction Sell in here sell in hereneeds to xxx xxx xx xxx The small number of females in board-level positions is an issue that needs to be remedied if women are to enjoy equality in the workforce. And while there’s still a long way to go before equality is even within reach, the figures are heading the right way at present. According to the Department of Business, the number of women on FTSE 100 companies’ boards has risen to just over 16% in 2012, from 12.5% in 2011. This is a response to Lord Davies’ target to see 25% female representation on such boards by 2015.. 12 ● MARCH 2013 10-13 women work thru agesFINAL.indd 12 29/1/13 11:00:03 http://www.ons.gov.uk http://www.ons.gov.uk http://www.oecd.org http://www.fawcettsociety.org.uk
