‘I feel at ease with myself now’ Mary Rowlands*, 59, Had a breast reduction operation last October. The results, physically and mentally, have been nothing but positive… B efore I had my operation, I never really knew my bra size. For years, I’d been squeezing myself into a double-E bra, but I was definitely bigger than that. If I’m honest, I’m sure I was at least an F-cup size. ‘I also had a very long drop in my breasts and, with the lack of elasticity that comes with age, it meant they were very heavy. When I was much younger, I used to be a C or a D, with breasts closer to my face than my stomach! But, as I aged, I put on weight, and with the increasing weight came the increased breast size. I used to buy minimiser bras to push my breasts in and try to decrease their size but, not only did they give me no shape whatsoever, the weight of my breasts meant the thick, wide straps would really cut into my shoulders. ‘I was always conscious of my breasts – I’m a professional working woman and at work, every now and then, I would have to move my bra straps across my shoulders to a new position to stop them digging in. By the end of each day, I was in a lot of discomfort and, when I got home, I was just desperate to take off my bra. It sometimes felt like I had been wearing a strait jacket all day.’ Living in discomfort ‘Luckily, I didn’t experience any back pain due to the size and hang of my breasts, but I was definitely beginning to stoop. I was carrying so much weight on my front that it was an effort to keep myself upright with good posture.
