Work out to a new beat Good for: heart health This high-energy fitness class is set to music and combines traditional tennis practise with staminabuilding skills such as fast-paced hitting drills, as well as throwing and catching exercises. ‘The main purpose of the class is to improve your cardiovascular fitness,’ says Rob Beale, head of sport, health and fitness at David Lloyd. ‘If you’re new to tennis, having a 10-shot rally in a conventional match can be quite difficult – chances are the rally will break down after a certain number of shots and you’ll lose interest. With cardio tennis, you have a coach feeding you balls, so you’re guaranteed to get your heart rate up.’ CARDIO TENNIS WHAT TO EXPECT A unique aspect of cardio tennis is that you wear a heart rate monitor throughout the class, working in your target heart rate zone (somewhere between 70-90% of your maximum heart rate) to ensure you get maximum cardiovascular benefits. Each player is fed a variety of shots – forehands, backhands, lobs, drop shots, smashes, cross court, down the line, and so on – and you hit the ball, run around the court, then return to where you started to play the shot again. This is repeated 10 or 12 times to form a ‘drill’ lasting around five minutes. Whether the ball goes in or out is irrelevant – the aim is to get fit and enjoy it at the same time. BODY BENEFITS If you attend classes regularly, you can expect your blood pressure levels to fall within a healthy range. You’ll also reduce your resting heart rate (a measure of increased fitness) and recover faster after exercise. The weight-bearing element means you’ll develop stronger bones, helping prevent osteoporosis. You’ll also burn fat and increase the rate at which you metabolise sugar, lowering your risk of chronic illnesses including stroke, diabetes and some cancers. CALORIE BURN 500* per hour. Good for: building strength and increasing muscle tone It came third in the American College of Sports Medicine’s survey of the top fitness trends for 2013, using your own bodyweight to train is set to take centre stage in the UK this year. Hot off the blocks is Fitness First’s new Athletic Fitness class, which includes an additional post-Olympic twist – perfect inspiration for any wannabe athletes out there. ‘Athletic Fitness is the first class of its kind that brings expertise from iconic athletes into the workout studio,’ says David Perrin, fitness support manager at Fitness First. ‘We worked with experts in their respective fields to bring to life insights from triple jumper Phillips Idowu, long-distance runner, Mo Farah, and gymnast, Louis Smith.’ BODYWEIGHT TRAINING WHAT TO EXPECT Reflecting the athletes’ areas of expertise, Athletic Fitness focuses on three elements – endurance, speed and power. After a thorough warm-up, exercises include different squat and lunge combinations, side plank into planks, staggered pressups, burpee pikes and speed-skater jumps. ‘The class also uses movements that reflect your everyday activities, for example twisting, bending and jumping. This prepares your body for everyday life which, in turn, helps prevents injury,’ says David. BODY BENEFITS You can expect to increase your lean muscle tissue and create a toned and defined look which, in turn, will boost your metabolism and burn more calories. Resistance training also boosts your core as well as functional strength. And because you’re using your bodyweight to adapt to the difficulty of the exercise, you learn how to optimise whole-body muscle function in any given movement, enhancing your strength further. For example, a bench press is effectively just an arm exercise, but a one-armed push-up utilises your entire core and pelvis as well as your arm. CALORIE BURN 600-800* in 45 minutes. And with new fitness classes exploding on the scene quicker than you can say Zumba tone-up sticks, there’s never been a better time to get your heart pumping. If you want to get your body in the best shape possible, your fitness plan should include three elements – cardio, resistance and flexibility.
