Home safety e plained KNOW THE RISKS TO YOUR FAMILY’S SAFETY IN YOUR OWN ENVIRONMENT AND WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP PREVENT ACCIDENTS HAPPENING T he age of your children has a huge impact on what you need to think about when it comes to keeping your home a safe place for you and your family. Whether your children are babies, toddlers or teens, there are always things to bear in mind. According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), children aged from birth to four years old are those most at risk of accidents in the home, with falls accounting for most non-fatal accidents, followed closely by severe heat-related injuries. Perhaps surprisingly, the largest number of accidents happen in the living or dining room, but more serious accidents occur in the kitchen and on the stairs. On an annual basis, more than 67,000 children experience an accident in the kitchen, while 58,000 children have accidents on the stairs. So, here’s what to get sorted – now – to keep everyone under your roof safe and sound in future. FALLS Forty-four per cent of all accidents in the home are the result of a fall of some description. STAIRS Ensure you install a safety gate with a BS EN 1930: 2011 label, at both the top and bottom of any staircases in your house. Every time you go through it, double check that it is closed safely, otherwise, not only do you risk your child falling down a ﬂight of stairs, but they may also hurt their ﬁngers or hand if they get a digit caught in the gate’s mechanism. OBSERVE BATHING TIME IS A SIGNIFICANT RISK: A CHILD CAN DROWN IN LESS THAN 3cm OF WATER. NEVER LEAVE THEM ALONE IN THE BATHROOM FALLS FROM HIGH SURFACES Many new parents place their baby’s changing mat on top of a chest of drawers so they don’t have to bend too low every time they change a nappy. But remember to never turn your back on your baby, especially when they start being able to roll over and, later, sit up and crawl. You only need to turn your back for a second, and your baby or toddler could fall from what is essentially quite a substantial height.
