Alongside that penchant for afternoon tea and ill-ﬁtting suits, it’s a British stereotype. And it’s true that unlike our American cousins, with their perfect straight, white gnashers, Brits’ teeth are often far from the much-coveted ‘pearly whites’. However, this caricature could soon become long in the tooth, with the UK cosmetic dentistry market growing rapidly. TV makeover shows highlight readily available cosmetic dentistry procedures, and treatments such as veneers and whitening are no longer seen as the preserve of the rich and famous. KEEPING UP APPEARANCES If you’re unhappy with the look of your teeth, you’re certainly not alone. According to a YouGov survey, 45% of adults are unhappy with the appearance of their teeth, and 20% of them would consider orthodontic treatment to improve them. Tooth aesthetics was revealed as the key driver for orthodontic treatment, with more than half (56%) of those who’d contemplate it doing so purely for an improvement in appearance, and only 18% considering it to help oral health. BRACE YOURSELF Orthodontic treatments used to be associated with teenagers, with only the occasional adult opting for it. And treatments would usually mean wearing very visible braces. However, advances in orthodontic technology mean that today’s braces are very subtle and, in some cases, totally invisible. It’s unsurprising, then, that orthodontic treatment is no longer is considered a teenage treatment, and the number of adults wearing ‘invisible’ braces has more than doubled in the past two years. Impressive results are possible at any age, as evidenced by the number of adult celebrities who’ve opted for treatment in recent years. Singer and model, Myleene Klass, 34, has proudly shown off her braces, with great results; and it’s even rumoured that Kate Middleton, 31, wore a brace in the lead-up to her wedding.
