A new place to stay TAKE A BREAK FROM THE TRADITIONAL HOTEL HOLIDAY; YOU NEVER KNOW WHERE YOU MIGHT LAY YOUR HEAD and consumers’ ability to tailormake their getaways. So, what options are there for those seeking to turn their back on hotel holidays? RENTALS Whereas with hotel accommodation you tend book on a room-by-room basis (unless you have the budget for a suite), holiday rentals allow you to book a villa or apartment for your stay, making this hotel alternative ideal for those looking for multiple rooms and a living space. What’s more, in locations where hotels are pricey, it can actually prove a more cost-effective choice. However, do bear in mind that many rental properties will have a minimum-stay requirement of two or three nights, so for one-night getaways a hotel may prove a better ﬁt. WHERE CAN I STAY? Holiday rentals can be found in almost any location nowadays – from quaint cottages in rural England to swish city-centre GLAMPING Setting up your tent in the wind, rain – and even snow – is unlikely to appeal to even the hardiest camper… which is why glamping has such a following. An amalgamation of ‘glamorous’ and ‘camping’, it is indeed just that: with all the perks of being a stone’s throw away from nature combined with all the comforts of home… plus, on occasion, extras such as a wood-burning stove! This luxury experience is the perfect getaway for those who are not quite ready to brave camping but fancy venturing into the wild. WHERE CAN I STAY? Glamping is well-established here in the UK, with sites in many of our most beautiful landscapes. The Lake District, Cornwall, Pembrokeshire and the Scottish Highlands all have glamp sites. You can even travel abroad: from a treehouse in South Africa to a handpainted Mongolian yurt in the Pyrenees, and a nomadic camp in Chile’s Atacama Desert – no tent required! apartments and exotic getaways in the Caribbean – but Europe is currently enjoying popularity due to its proximity to the UK and subsequent reasonable ﬂight fares. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? Prices vary depending on the number of guests, location and duration of holiday rental, but there are certainly bargains to be had if you’re on a tight budget. For instance, you can ﬁnd a six-night cottage rental in France which sleeps six people, for a mere £285 for the week. (That’s less than £8 per person, per night!) However, a growing number of people are now seeking out hotel alternatives such as villa rentals, home-swaps and even luxury camping destinations. It appears that the current boom in alternative holiday accommodation is being driven by holidaymakers’ desire for ﬁne-tuned, bespoke holidays, where they are no longer conﬁned to the limits imposed by package deals.
