Fresh Perspectives On Show In A Fast-Changing Digital Landscape

An Exciting Future Awaits
As BroadcastAsia2018 draws to a close, Calvin Koh, Sales Director, TMT/Paper, UBM,
discusses this year's highlights...

BCA: How do you feel BroadcastAsia2018
has gone?
CK: It is a bit early to say for definite, but
there has been a lot of new technology on
display this year, which has brought a fresh
perspective to the show. For example, the
Hypervsn Wall (a digital signage solution
that generates holographic visuals of up to
three metres) and the debut of the Esports
Tournament have gained a lot of interest. It
has also been interesting to hear the new
approach to radio through our new feature
area, Radio's New Wave.
It is also encouraging to note that all of our
Hospitality Suites and conference sessions
were fully booked, and new companies have
been attracted to attend BroadcastAsia this
year.

BCA: Have you received any feedback from
the exhibitors throughout the event?
CK: I am able to spend time with our
speakers and show them why BroadcastAsia
is a good event for them to visit. There has
been a lot of engagement between exhibitors
and visitors to the event, particularly when
it comes to new technology. For example, a
regular request has been for more technology
such as IoT and AI to be more commonly
present. This year was the first year of
NXTAsia and it has taken shape nicely with
emerging technologies such as AI, robotics,
cyber security and IoT.
In addition to the exhibition, we had
conferences running throughout the three
days and start-ups as well. It has been full
of promise - and promising technology - and

espite recent reports that radio is in
decline, the facts argue that the medium
is here to stay.
While new technologies have helped radio to
develop further and deliver its products over
multiple platforms, innovation in content is the
key to the future of radio.
Opening
the
radio
stream
of
BroadcastAsia2018, Joan Warner, CEO of
Commercial Radio Australia (CRA), and
Vice President of WorldDAB, looked at the
world of radio now and in the future.
Speaking at the conference,
Warner praised "smart speakers"
who have "helped reinvent radio

for a new generation", before addressing the
recent reports of radio's popularity.
She said: "While the headlines are telling
people that new technology will destroy
radio, the facts tell a different story. In the
UK, the radio business puts a lot of money
through the economy. In Australia, radio
is outstripping the music streaming
services by a factor of about six to
one."

is to create it," Warner continued. "Our
job is to grow radio. The key to
success is not only high quality
local content but the ability to

BCA: Another first for the event was the
Esports Tournament?
CK: With the esports tournament
(SEAL), we wanted it to create
the backdrop of sports, and
we can use broadcast media
tools to produce professional
esports and high-quality content. Esports
is a multibillion dollar industry and is rapidly
growing in popularity in the region. We would
like to include more esports content in the
future.
BCA: What positives have you been able to
take from the show?
CK: Regionally, we are experiencing a lot
of disruption with regards to technology
and also consolidation. Despite the new
embrace change and deliver free, high quality
content across many platforms."
Warner added that both radio and audio
are undergoing a resurgence, giving the
example of News Corporation in the UK.
The organisation is establishing a new radio
and podcasting operation in its UK-based
headquarters in order to capitalise on this
growth.
Traditional broadcast radio remains strong,
but advancing technology means that it
has now expanded to every new platform
available. However, rather than view this
development as a threat to the industry, it was
suggested that the platforms actually provide
opportunities because its strengths lie in the
fact that it is live, free and "local reliable".

many returning customers to the show each
year. As event organisers, we must continue
to make sure ConnecTechAsia is the event for
media and telecommunication companies.
For 2018, we also experienced a lot more
active engagement from the conferences.
