Time to Ease the Control Room Pressure?
It is vital that broadcast studios and control rooms remain efficient
and productive so that critical decisions can be made quickly and
accurately, says Loki Ong, VP sales for APAC, Adder Technology...

T

he productivity of broadcast control rooms
depends on many factors, one of which
is ergonomics, including the arrangement
of furniture and the placement of computer
screens and displays. Despite this, space
constraints are a common problem associated
with broadcast control rooms. They are
invariably small spaces packed with people
and complex technology.
Therefore, the importance of ergonomics
in broadcast environments cannot be
overestimated.
Fortunately,
supporting
technologies
such as IP-based, high-performance KVM
(keyboard, video, mouse) have grown

IP-based KVM has proven itself in OB trucks

to become a fundamental part of many
broadcast control rooms. Specifically,
IP-based KVM allows the remote control
of multiple computers and applications
from a single workstation. This optimises
workflows and improves efficiency across
the entire control room by meeting operational
requirements and improving the ergonomics
of the workspace.
A specific broadcast environment where
IP-based, high-performance KVM has
proven itself is in outside broadcasting (OB)
trucks. Here, the confined and pressurised
environment brings great challenges,
particularly when instant decisions must
be made during live broadcasts. With IPbased KVM, the space inside the truck is
transformed into something far more flexible
and comfortable. Computer equipment can be
relocated away from the main working area
and staff can easily switch between monitors
from a single workstation - freeing up even
more space. With seamless switching

KVM enables remote control of multiple computers
from a single workstation

between applications and minimal latency
across the entire network, the environment
becomes more streamlined and efficient for
broadcast.
IP-based KVM also allows broadcasters
to centralise their computing resources into
separate access and temperature-controlled
server rooms within the building, with no
disruption to regular operations. This not only
provides more space, but it also means that
the physical computers can be better looked
after, with environmental factors such as
dust and humidity carefully monitored for an
increased lifespan.

Unlike other similar technologies, IPbased KVM allows users to control multiple
computers and applications with pixel-perfect
video quality. This is vital for post-production
suites, as editors need absolute assurance
that what they're seeing on-screen is as
visually accurate as it can possibly be, and
that the extension equipment has not had any
negative effect on the video quality.
The seamless switching ability of IPbased, high-performance KVM also enables
broadcasters to create a customised
edit suite by enabling different clients to
seamlessly switch between different presets and resources. These suites can then
be easily tweaked and customised, hugely
increasing overall efficiency and productivity
for broadcast workflows.
Far too often, because of the competitive
and fast-moving nature of their work,
broadcasters can focus too much on the
technology - and not enough on the people
using it. IP-based, high-performance KVM
enables them to look after both.
