Embracing Cloud Transformation to Power
Content Discovery and Personalisation
Consumers are watching more content than ever before, on more devices and across multiple services,
says Erik Ramberg, Head of TV Platform Product Management, Ericsson Media Solutions...

T

V providers need to respond by ensuring
they are providing the most compelling
experience every step of the way in order to
differentiate and compete on the media stage.
The global TV and Media industry is
adapting to consumer demands for content
on any platform, whenever and wherever
they want it. According to Ericsson's annual
ConsumerLab TV & Media report, linear
and video on demand (VOD) viewing will
be almost equal in just three years. As the
number of TV and video services increases,
so does the average time spent searching for

TV providers are responding to evolving consumer habits

content, growing over the last year by 13%, to
reach almost one hour per day.
Innovators across the industry are
responding to these demands, and in many
cases embracing cloud technology, to
deliver transformative change and unlock the
potential for new services.
Cloud-enabled services are providing
the basis for TV providers to move away
from legacy EPG and 'by category' lists to
respond to evolving consumer habits. These
capabilities give TV providers the agility to
quickly scale-up to meet viewer demands and
match premium content with the speed and
flexibility of over-the-top (OTT) services.
For example, Jupiter Telecommunications
(J:COM), Japan's largest cable system
operator is deploying the media optimised,
cloud-based Ericsson MediaFirst TV Platform
to enable an enhanced, personalised
multiscreen TV experience for its 3.7 million

Better data is enabling
services to become
more personalised

subscribers. The new next-generation TV
service will provide subscribers with features
including a highly personalised, seamless TV
experience on all screens, and the ability to
watch live TV and access content on demand
on any device. Ericsson Media Solutions will
also be deploying the industry standard RDK
in J:COM's set-top boxes and a conditional
access system (A-CAS) to enable the delivery
of Ultra HD content.
The knock-on effect of delivering this type
of next generation TV service is reducing
complexity, cost and time. Service providers

are turning to scalable cloud-based solutions
to help them manage this in a more unified
way. Cloud solutions also allow them to scale
the multiple servers and applications required
for multiple processes such as storage,
video streaming, OTT video streaming and
transcoding.
With so much content spread across
multiple services, Ericsson ConsumerLab
research shows that current content
discovery capabilities are failing to cope,
which is why seven out of 10 consumers
say a universal search feature would be
very useful. Better data is enabling services
to become even more personalised and
relevant for users. We are now seeing greater
tailoring of recommendations on live and VOD
services to help build foundations to support
a more immersive and engaging viewing
experience in the longer term.
