NAGRA & Samsung Promote TVkey
NAGRA and Samsung Electronics have announced a series of new milestones and developments that
are propelling the TVkey direct-to-TV solution toward global market implementation...

T

hey include the launch of new customers in
India, further expansion in Latin America,
continuous marketing promotion of TVkey in
the German market by leading customer HD+,
and the addition of chipset partners, opening
the path to integration into new TV brands.
Jointly developed by NAGRA and
Samsung, TVkey, a CES® 2017 Innovation
Awards honouree, enables operators to
lower the barriers to entry for pay-TV
services while remaining fully in control of
the user experience, and enables device
manufacturers to expand the range of

services available on their new TV models.
TVkey received the award for "Best
Content Protection Technology" at the
15th annual CSI Awards at IBC 2017,
recognising the value it brings to the
CE industry, pay-TV operators and
consumers alike.
TVkey allows consumers to enjoy premium
content directly on new TV sets through a
simple sign-up process with their pay-TV
provider and experience high-quality services,
including 4K Ultra HD and HDR, directly on
all Samsung Smart TVs using the TV remote
control. The system provides the highest level
of content protection and the USB dongle
offers a fast and secure way for pay-TV
operators to bring advanced services directly
to new consumer TV sets.
The TVkey framework is based on
a NAGRA-designed root of trust that
communicates securely with
the TVkey dongle and the TVkey
chip in selected Samsung TVs.

Consumers can enjoy premium content directly on new TVs

NAGRA NexGuard watermarking is integrated within the TV

This creates a secure media path and enables
strict enforcement of usage rules as required
by Hollywood for the protection of high-value
content. Since 2017, NAGRA NexGuard
watermarking is integrated within the TV
itself and controlled by the service provider
through the TVkey dongle. With the addition
of forensic watermarking, TVkey now fully
meets all requirements for Enhanced Content
Protection specified by MovieLabs, the joint
technology venture of the Hollywood studios
that advises studios on topics like content
protection.
In January 2018, NAGRA announced the
launch of TVkey integrated with its Conax

content protection solution.
The creation of a joint TVkey Trust
Authority in 2018, as planned by
NAGRA and Samsung, will also enable
the TVkey to support additional
TV brands and CAS vendors. In
this respect, TV chipset vendor
Novatek is already supporting the
TVkey hardware root of trust in their
TV chipsets for leading TV brands, while
other manufacturers are evaluating TVkey's
integration in their products.
Since launching in Germany with HD+
in February 2017, TVkey is now also being
deployed in India with two major cable MSOs.
NAGRA and Samsung are demonstrating
TVkey with several leading operators around
the world integrating the solution in their
environment, and establishing how TVkey
can successfully protect their content while
offering operator's branding on TVs.
TVkey is being demonstrated on the NAGRA
