AWS: Optimising Bandwidth, Storage,
and Video Quality with QVBR
AWS is showcasing solutions designed to advance the quality of streaming video, while also reducing
the network bandwidth and storage capacity required to deliver outstanding viewing experiences...

O

ne of the highlights featured on the AWS
stand (4D2-01) is Quality-Defined Variable
Bitrate control, or QVBR.
Meeting video quality requirements is an
ongoing challenge for OTT service providers.
Information contained in encoded video is
inherently variable: different content and
scenes carry varying amounts of information
in each video frame. Optimally, bitrate would
also vary over time to match changing
complexity and maintain consistent video
quality.
Introduced in April, AWS Elemental QVBR
is a video compression technique that is
designed to deliver constant video quality
and waste zero bits in the process by
automatically adjusting bitrates in real time.
When video quality requirements are high, but
bandwidth budget is low, QVBR addresses
both issues.
"The challenges with encoding video at

AWS Elemental QVBR is a video compression technique

a constant bitrate is using more bits than is
necessary to meet video quality requirements.
Or, you may not have enough bits when
needed, resulting in lower video quality," said
Andrew Thornton, General Manager - APAC,
AWS Elemental. "Different types of content
require different bitrate choices and operators
may need to make a best-guess selection.
"Encoding video at a variable bitrate
includes its own challenges," continued
Thornton. "The encoder uses as many bits as
required to maintain an average bitrate, even if
not needed for video quality. Different settings
for different content types are needed and

you can't get to optimal bit savings unless
you encode multiple times and iterate to the
lowest bitrate required."
A
QVBR-enabled
video
encoder
automatically adjusts quantisation to maintain
a consistent viewing experience based on
a target quality level. QVBR operates on
an individual frame basis and is built on
statistics developed for perceptual encoding
such as adaptive quantisation (AQ), rate
control (RC) and mode decision (MD). MD
is where the codec chooses block sizes, skip
mode, whether to use intra/inter/skip mode,
motion vectors, etc. QVBR also eliminates
the guesswork and frustration of managing
an operation's "bits budget": Set it and
forget it. When video scenes are more
complex, QVBR spends bits to maintain
desired video quality levels. When video
quality levels are reached, QVBR
saves bits.
Andrew Thornton

According to Thornton, content providers
who incorporate QVBR within their workflows
can potentially realise savings of 10 to 50
percent on their CDN bandwidth and storage
capacity requirements, depending on video
content. At the same time, they can improve
the consistency of their video quality,
maintaining uniformity across all content, and
using a higher peak bitrate only for complex
scenes.
"Managing QVBR is simple," said Thornton.
"Users set a fixed video quality level and a
max bitrate, and the encoding software does
the rest, and the solution works with both
one-pass encoding for live video (or faster
turnaround VOD encoding), or two-pass
encoding for additional processing."
QVBR is available today as part of AWS
Elemental software solutions and is offered
with no additional license fees.

video quality that is especially important for
broadcast applications.
VITEC is also showcasing its EZ TV IPTV
and Digital Signage Platform, a scalable,
future-proof IPTV and digital signage solution
that automates video streaming workflows,
signage campaigns, and video wall

MGW Diamond supports HEVC and H.264 encoding

management over existing IP networks.
It supports both H.264 and HEVC formats
in resolutions up to 4K, combined with AES
encryption to ensure secure content delivery.
Adding further value of the system, the
platform's new video wall capability simplifies
deployment and management of projects
involving IPTV, digital signage, and video wall
content, while delivering a breathtaking visual
experience.
The latest release of the platform expands
its DRM interoperability and adds new
enterprise IPTV capabilities.
