KVM in Post Production
Terence Teng, Managing Director of IHSE, APAC provides an overview
of the benefits of incorporating a keyboard, video, mouse (KVM)
switch into today's modern post-production facility...

I

n post-production studios, creative teams
need to access and manage a broad range
of digital media workstations and to be able to
switch between them quickly and easily.
They need to have unrestricted access to all
content servers and editing tools from their
own desks without having to change location
or use individual terminals for each task.

KVM (Keyboard, Video and Mouse)
switches allow them to achieve this by
providing an instant connection to every
editing device, even when located at a
considerable distance away in a secure
computer room.
To the operator, it is as though all
equipment is local to them: they can operate
whichever device they need and switch
between them with the press of a button,
or simple keyboard command, tus making
it simpler, quicker and more convenient to
carry out their work.
In addition to the ergonomic advantages of
instant access to all devices, there are other
valuable benefits.
Such as: removing noisy, heat-generating
computer hardware from the operator work
area creates a better, quieter and lesscluttered working environment; equipment
can be shared and allocated as needed,
rather than providing each operator with

expensive sets of high-power computing

and

licences;
workspaces and editing suites do not have to
be assigned to a specific role, giving greater
flexibility and savings in high real-estate
costs, allowing studios to address a wider
range of projects; locating hardware in a
central, secure, environmentally-controlled
room increases security against unauthorised
access, prolongs its lifetime and allows
more manageable maintenance and upgrade
procedures to be carried out.
KVM switches and extenders can operate
over long distances: up to 140 metres with
copper cabling or multi-mode fibre and

27

up to 10km with single mode fibre. Any
facility can be equipped with a single switch
connected to all computers in a central
computer area. In addition, multiple switches
can be connected together in a grid layout to
create local networks in individual buildings
with interconnection to other networks for
maximum operational efficiency.
IHSE KVM switches are available in fixedformat arrays and modular systems,
allowing any size matrix to be deployed.
The technology has been developed
to meet the high-performance and
demanding requirements of today's
broadcast industry. These include: Instant
connection and switching - no delay to
operators when changing applications; HDSDI and USB 3.0 parallel switching - multiple
data streams can be switched together;
Integration with third-party controllers allowing greater control of the full system;
Near-zero transmission latency - critical in
the post-production workflow; Artefact-free
video and audio - so that the full picture is
seen; Support for all digital and audio video
formats - allowing any signal to be handled;
and extensive redundancy and security
options - contributing to 24/7, highly-reliable,
operation.
IHSE is exhibiting at booth 6F3-01.
