Rethinking the Content Ecosystem
with Blockchain

T

oday's content ecosystem is becoming
much richer with respect to who is creating
content, and where it is distributed and
eventually consumed. More content creation
is coming from large established content
producers, as well as smaller newcomers.
At the same time, content needs to be made
available faster across the globe, while release
windows are being compressed.
As this content ecosystem embraces the
cloud and associated technologies, there is a
great opportunity to improve the efficiency of
the end-to-end delivery process and remove
obstacles that impede transparency and flow
of information.
In order to streamline and scale up this
ecosystem, information about available
content must be made easily accessible,
content rights and purchasing options must
be very clear, and different content formats
and encodings must be available. A content
management system that efficiently connects
content creators with content distributors
and aggregators will eliminate friction and
inefficiencies in today's workflows.

So now imagine if content is published by

powered by a blockchain. Service providers
would be able to discover and access content
in the file format, encoding standard and the
digital rights they need. We are talking about
metadata and URLs, not the actual content
being on the blockchain ledger. This would
also serve as a mechanism to manage
payment, track metrics on who is distributing/
viewing the content and enforce usage rules.
As some of this data may be sensitive, the
implementation will likely use one of the
permissioned blockchain architectures with a

proper access control policy.
This type of functionality has many
implications that address the limitations of the
current content ecosystem, e.g. redundant
encoding farms creating 50+ different file
formats for hundreds of different service
providers.
The current many-to-many system for
distributing content between owners and
service providers will be transformed into a
widely available, distributed and replicated
system without a central authority that makes
it easier, faster, more cost efficient and
more secure to get content to the providers.
As stakeholders of this system continue
to accept and adopt more cloud-based
functions for delivering content, a distributed
blockchain system is really the next step.
Blockchain, as any other technology, is
not the right choice for every application.
But there is a clear pathway for the content
ecosystem to take advantage of the
blockchain benefits and avoid the pitfalls, to
be successful.
