OUR GLOBAL GOALS

MARKETS
FROM COMMUNITY ENTERPRISES TO MULTINATIONAL COMPANIES AND CONSUMERS, WE WILL
INFLUENCE MARKETS SO THEY ARE GOOD FOR THE PLANET AND FOR PEOPLE.
By 2030, we aim to shift local, regional
and global markets towards sustainable
production and consumption. We will
work with partners to focus on the big
opportunities and needs to define and
implement innovative solutions that can
create change at scale.
We will seek to switch demand
for products and services to more
sustainable or responsible choices.
This will include commodities such
as soybeans, beef, palm oil and rubber
that are causing widespread conversion
of habitats including forests and
grasslands for their production.
It will also include commodities with
other impacts - gold extraction, for
example, which is causing mercury
pollution in rivers and waterways
and threatening river dolphins.

We will work to reduce demand for
illegal wildlife products, such as
elephant ivory and shark fins, which
are pushing species towards extinction.
We will also address demand for
materials such as plastics, which
are contributing to greenhouse gas
emissions and threatening wildlife.
And we will seek to increase
demand for sustainably produced
products through community
enterprises that support local
conservation by providing alternate
livelihoods. These include non-timber
forest products such as rattan, small
scale food products such as honey
and berries, marine products
for coastal communities, and
community eco-tourism.

THE CHALLENGE
The way we produce,
trade, consume and waste
presents huge threats to the
natural world. Increases
in food production to meet
global demand are driving
the destruction of forests
and grasslands. The trade
in wildlife, from tigers to
pangolins, is impacting
many species. And, our
economies remain geared
towards continuous growth
and rely on people buying
more stuff. And as the global
population grows further,
business as usual will
accelerate this destruction.
We need to take action.
