Efﬁciency to the power of ﬁve reduces TCO for network operators
With broadcasting and wireless communications competing for scarce frequency resources, broadcast network operators must often use other frequencies or better utilize existing capacities. Network digitization and upgrading to more efficient standards such as DVB-T2 play a major role in this context. Operators require flexible, cost-efficient broadcasting equipment. Efficiency in perfect combination Rohde & Schwarz has been focusing on the efficiency of its broadcast equipment for years. As a result, we can offer network operators the best solutions to meet these challenges. E5 – efficiency to the power of five: implemented in all transmitters of the new generation Last year, Rohde & Schwarz set new standards for energy efficiency with its R&S®THU9 transmitter family. With an efficiency of up to 28 percent for COFDM standards and up to 30 percent for ATSC this transmitter family is a market leader. What is more, the R&S®THU9 beats its own record and increases efficiency to even higher levels thanks to its Doherty amplifier design. Doherty technology has also been implemented in the new R&S®TMU9 medium-power transmitter. Its high efficiency enables users to save a great deal of energy and significantly reduce CO2 emissions. However, unique efficiency is not the only argument in favor of the new transmitter generation. The transmitters also boast excellent flexibility, future-readiness, exceptional power density and customizable operating concept. The MultiTX system, which makes it possible to accommodate multiple transmitters and configurations in a single rack, makes for a flexible, scalable system design. For us, efficiency also means transmitters that are easy to operate. For this reason, Rohde & Schwarz has developed the operating concept of the new transmitter generation by drawing on the experience of many users. The result: an easy-to-learn system with clearly designed status display.

Reliable, fail-safe, rugged – broadcasting equipment from Rohde & Schwarz in demand worlwide
When it comes to state-of-the-art broadcasting, Rohde & Schwarz is in great demand all over the world. For example, projects in Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Colombia have allowed Rohde & Schwarz once again to demonstrate its expertise as an innovative supplier of TV and sound broadcasting equipment. State-of-the-art equipment for a spectacular tower The Ministry of Communication of the Republic of Turkmenistan is a long-standing Rohde & Schwarz customer. The high failsafety and ruggedness of the transmitters repeatedly scored plus points in favor of Rohde & Schwarz. As part of a new agreement, Rohde & Schwarz was commissioned as the exclusive supplier of 159 transmitters for the nationwide analog TV/FM broadcast network. In addition, the customer ordered a total of 28 digital and analog TV transmitter systems (DVB-T2/ATV) and DAB/FM radio transmitter systems for the new TV tower near the capital, Ashgabat. One particular challenge was the timely installation of the transmitters in the new TV tower that is equaled by no other due to its exceptional architecture and “Oguz Khan”, the star. The Rohde & Schwarz equipment was installed in the transmitter room on the 31st floor in the shortest time possible. The first transmitter went on the air on the 20th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s declaration of independence, and the entire transmitter site was handed over on schedule a few weeks later. Entry into the era of digital TV The deadline for delivering the order placed by the public Kazakh broadcaster Kazteleradio with Rohde & Schwarz at the end of 2011 was also very tight. Within a few weeks, a turnkey transmitter system had to be delivered and installed for the cities of Almaty, Astana and Karaganda. Each of the systems for the three cities included two DVB-T2 high-power transmitters, headends with encoders, multiplexers and inserters for local programs and commercials, satellite receiving and decoding systems, multiscreen systems for operational monitoring as well as measurement and RF monitoring systems. The transmitter systems were handed over on time and to the customer’s complete satisfaction, opening the gates for the country’s entry into the era of digital TV. Leading the way for DVB-T2 Next year, Colombia will be the first country in Latin America to go on the air with a DVB-T2 TV network. The network will use R&S®THU9 high-power transmitters from Rohde & Schwarz. As early as 2010, Consorcio Canales Nacionales Privados (CCNP), which is responsible for introducing digital broadcasting to Colombia’s private broadcasters, decided to start DVB-T with transmitters from the Rohde & Schwarz. These transmitters will be upgraded to DVB-T2 using the R&S®TSE800 transmitter system extension. In the next phase, Rohde & Schwarz will set up another eight transmitter sites. R&S®THU9 high-power transmitters in a 2+1 redundancy configuration were chosen for the expansion project. In making this decision, CCNP was concerned with high energy efficiency, minimal size, low operating costs and reliable service.
