Wellen+Nöthen’s Managing Director Peter Nöthen reviews the recent changes at the company and the launch of the consulting and development division

InBroadcast: How is your company performing? Peter Nöthen: In the past three years Wellen+Nöthen group has achieved significant growth in nearly all of its business divisions. We have an ongoing increase of turnover in all business divisions: Sales & Distribution, Rental, System Integration, Service & Support. At the same time, this year we are launching our new Consulting & Development business division on the market. In terms of staff we have also grown significantly, in order to handle increasing demand and order volumes. We have been able to increase the numbers of both national and international clients and are currently working with hundreds of small and mid-sized media customers as well almost all of the public service broadcasters and private stations in the German-speaking region. The process of going international with our company, which began in 2009, has proven a huge success in the Middle East. Through our collaboration with Qvest Media we have established a partnership within the Wellen+Nöthen group which serves very similar clientele with a comparable portfolio of products and services. The strategy of taking our own ‘Made in Germany’ solutions and standards to market in this region can be considered a success from today’s perspective.

The Consulting & Development unit operates independently from the other business divisions. This is an important aspect for us because we want to offer our customers consulting services that are 100% independent of the manufacturers, products and services of our other business divisions, in order to find the best solution for every customer. We realise that we can support media companies and broadcasters better if we are involved early on in the planning and decisionmaking process…We conduct analyses on possible outsourcing models or develop alternative in-house operator concepts. Our strategy enables us to work alongside the customer almost completely from beginning to end of the project. InB: Tell me about your company’s recent successes? PN: In the past few years our company has recorded the highest growth in our System Integration unit. This year in particular, we strengthened our Planning, Commissioning and Project Management divisions by hiring additional junior and senior engineers. One important task for the coming business year will be to further optimise our System Integration division regarding all pertinent project processes. This is mainly in the interest of the customer: in our role as general contractor, we are expected to deliver not only technical realisation but also contract and project management in line with up-to-the-minute standards. The use of modern project software and communication tools supports the coordination of all processes in the individual project phases on a constant high level of professionalism. That is the only way we can offer our customers constant added value, which benefits both sides down the line. For years now, sections of our System Integration unit have closely focused on the area of broadcast IT…we will continue on with this specialisation process and further focus on broadcast IT when selecting projects and staff

and structuring our further training measures. InB: Which areas are showing particular activity? PN: At the moment we are involved in a number of system integration projects in the German-speaking regions and the Middle East, for example: • ProSieben Media AG / Puls 4, Austria: overall realisation of HD studios and HD control rooms plus set-up of temporary control rooms; • Deutsche Welle, Germany: startup of a virtual studio; • Südwestrundfunk, Germany: integration of an automation system and the HD traffic systems in the playout centre of SWR; • ZDF, Germany: expansion of various storage solutions based on Isilon; • Etisalat, UAE: integration of a MAM system, traffic systems and automation for up to 20 broadcast channels; • Al Jazeera Sports, UAE: set-up of entire broadcasting infrastructure including the central technology and broadcast centre for 40 HD channels; • Al Jazeera Sports, UAE: expansion of audio and video post-production and central storage system with Smoke, Final Cut Pro and Avid Pro tools; • Dubai TV, UAE: set-up of a central archiving system and integration in post-production and automation; • Al Jazeera Children’s Channel, UAE: realisation of a mobile HD studio including control rooms. InB: What criteria does the market use to make buying decisions for your services? PN: The products in today’s broadcast market are often highlycomplex IT components consisting of workstations, servers and network technologies for in-house and worldwide data communication. Add to that a number of software applications for highly diversified single-user solutions, huge networked broadcasting platforms and such new application fields as, for example, cloud computing.

More than ever broadcasting technologies are expected to provide the highest level of efficiency and constant availability of all systems around the clock. We are all familiar with the situation, for example, when the server crashes or the internet connection is down for a certain period of time and we all know just how powerless and inefficient that makes us feel. Our company endeavours to provide the highest possible level of availability, while adapting to the resulting higher technical requirements. At the same time we want to give our customers the choice of whether or not they need support and service for their seamless product and system availability. With the introduction of our new service concept, which we call ‘Priority Support’, we give our clients precisely this freedom. Priority Support consists of a set catalogue of preferred services, as well as a range of optional modules, such as guarantee renewal, expanded backup service or installation and configuration support. This way, our Priority customers can decide for themselves just how much help they need and which services they can do without. Once a contract is signed, basically anyone can become our Priority customer. It plays no role whether or not this was preceded by business with Wellen+Nöthen or Qvest Media based on trade or systems integration. InB: Thank you for taking time out to answer our questions.

InB: What developments have you implemented? PN: This year Wellen+Nöthen will launch the new Consulting & Development business unit in the market and officially introduced it for the first time at IBC. Over the past 12 months the new Consulting & Development business division has been up and running with Jörg Gehlen heading up a team of eight highly-qualified consultants, technical experts and commercial project managers. Whenever necessary the team calls in additional specialists, such as freelance legal advisers.
