Maximising Video Archives With Speed And Accuracy
By Claudio Lisman, President of Primestream

Producing quality programming, and making money doing so, is impossible without adding metadata to video (also known as logging). With that in mind, ViaSat, a direct broadcast satellite and Pay TV broadcaster, sought to build a solid asset management and automation platform for a faster, more efficient way of working. ViaSat has countless hours worth of video content in its archive – an archive that grows larger every time the broadcaster covers a new game or match. User-friendly, accurate metadata-logging is absolutely critical if its producers and editors are to call up a particular piece of video – and, more importantly, the “event” that occurred within that video – from that vast archive at the exact moment they need it, even if they don’t know exactly what they’re looking for. Metadata is important not just because it describes assets, but also because it can be used as a basis to find, filter, and use assets that meet certain criteria in the future. If it could improve its metadata-logging process and make better use of its metadata, ViaSat stands a better chance of monetising more of its assets. Precise, metadata-logging is one

important way for broadcasters to monetise content effectively, rather than letting it clutter the archive, never to be seen again. It’s an essential but tedious and time-consuming process, as most broadcasters know all too well. It can take a dedicated content logger several hours to tag a single game, and they are often hampered by typing in an inflexible interface, or by products that don’t integrate well with other systems. The process is made all the more tedious by the fact that it usually requires separate logging products for different sports – one for baseball, another for football, another for swimming, etc. The logging products that are transferrable from one sport to another only provide one or two layers of detail, and are not designed for live logging into an asset management archive with automation. In order to avoid leaving video in the vault and money on the table, this sports broadcaster needed a way to log metadata quickly and easily, for multiple sports, with an infinite level of detail, as the content comes in live or pre-recorded, from a single logging tool – and all as part of an asset management platform. It was a tall order, but one that

Primestream’s FORK Logger offers quick metadata creation tools

Primestream filled easily with its FORK Logger 1.0, a new crossplatform module that’s part of the acclaimed FORK Production Suite 3.5. FORK Logger is a powerful, highly configurable, user-friendly tool built inside FORK for quick metadata tagging. It allows for logging live or prerecorded video, and the best part is, its interface is completely customisable, so it can be designed and configured to look exactly how the user wants it. The module’s tightly integrated user interface enables content loggers to tag video with defined metadata into the FORK environment effortlessly, making assets easier to manage, automate, and, ultimately, monetise. The FORK Logger supports multiple layouts per system. Users can work live with ingesting feeds or call up existing clips inside FORK. With FORK Logger, users can log video fi les so that they can be searched, filtered, and organised by any metadata entry inside FORK Content Navigator, FORK’s media asset manager. They can log key information using a FORK-generated proxy or highresolution video, and the FORK Logger creates FORK markers and subclips that can be seen and used across the FORK platform. A vi de o archive is only as good as the descriptive metadata that goes into it, and FORK Logger allows for nearly endless levels of metadata, including information assigned automatically (such as file size, duration, location on disk); information provided by producers, writers, editors, and ENG operators (such as slug name, description, video source,

characteristics); and information about data relationships (such as which clips are part of which projects, which in and out points are marked on a clip). That metadata is in addition to details such as player actions, player lists, or even action type (e.g., goal, goal type, assist, penalty type, player position, etc.). At the heart of the FORK Logger is a dynamic GUI containing form panels, button panels, video viewers, marker thumbnail lists, and a bin list of created events, all of which are tools that can be combined - many in a dynamic way - based on the content. Logger forms act exactly the same way as they do in the FORK Clip Viewer, including dynamic show/hide of fields, keyword lists, labels, etc. Button panels are configured as a grid of buttons X by Y in size, and buttons are individually configured to set properties or make actions. Users have the option to include a marker thumbnail view of the created entries for quick visual reference. All logged events also go into a bin view in the Logger window, with columns that can be customised per Logger layout so that users have a quick custom view with important properties listed in a table. Click on the entry and the event is loaded into the Logger. The standard FORK Clip Viewer shows the currently selected (or newly created) log entry. As with FORK Content Navigator, FORK Logger allows more than one user to log the same clip at the same time, and all created events are accessible instantly by the other loggers or FORK users. Any FORK client can become a FORK Logger with no special station required. FORK Logger is available for both Mac and Windows operating systems. The variety of configurations and the ability to change the interface dynamically based on the data and context makes FORK Logger unlike any other metadata tool on the market – one that helps broadcasters more easily turn assets into revenue. ■
