InBroadcast: How is your company changing to meet client demands? Alan Wright: After coming under new ownership nearly two years ago, Grass Valley began a transformation to ensure the company is in tune with the fast-evolving needs of the broadcast and media industries – focused on making Grass Valley the Premier Video Technology Solutions Company. We have made considerable efforts to deepen our relationships with our customers. Our goal is to become a strategic partner and trusted advisor, so earlier this year, we launched an executive roundtable program which enables us to hear first-hand from customers what their challenges are, as well as how we can better support them. We launched ‘Connect’, a new channel program to reenforce our partnerships and to strengthen the Grass Valley partner ecosystem by focusing on four areas: market, sales, support and services (with an Authorised Services Provider model). At IBC, we announced that AVIT-Systems had joined our Connect program. Finally, we have re-organised our European services organisation so that we now provide 24/7 customer support across the entire region. InB: What criteria does the market use to make decisions for your services? AW: Decisions are made based on a number of factors, but ultimately it comes down to trust. Can a broadcaster trust you to deliver on commitments and support them when needed? Can they trust that you have an eye to the future, that you can anticipate the solutions and services they will need, and that you have the knowledge to develop those solutions? And, most importantly, will you be a true partner who will help them remain competitive in this market? Grass Valley is focused on ensuring that the answer to these questions is always yes. InB: Which territories are showing particular activity? AW: We are seeing great momentum across the region but in particular from high-growth markets such as Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Russia. We have been excited this year to partner with industry leaders such as Fox Turkey, a freeto-air general entertainment channel broadcaster, as part of their HD rollout, as well as with Dubai TV and Qatar TV.

Alan Wright, Senior Vice President and Region President, EMEA at Grass Valley fields the InBroadcast questions…
InB: Any innovations ahead? AW: We are very aware of the changes that are occurring in the media industry. Content producers are being asked to increase distribution channels to address the growing consumer need for accessible media, yet resources aren’t keeping up with expectations. Grass Valley took a major step at IBC last month, revealing a product roadmap for the next three years that includes “refreshing” its entire product portfolio with a common, software-centric architecture that allows customers to choose the features and functionality they need for cameras, production switchers, and video servers. Using the latest in IT and IP based technologies, all of these products will be tightly integrated into a variety of file-based workflows targeted at live sports, news and playout applications. These applications will be tied together with Grass Valley’s new service oriented architecture (SOA) platform, GV STRATUS. This is the area where you will continue to see innovation and announcements from us. InB: Give some examples of your services in action. a single, purpose-designed control panel rather than having to access this equipment via the different proprietary systems supplied with each and every unit in the chain. Helm panels are created using a simple drag-and-drop system, allowing broadcasters to tailor the software interface to the precise needs of their facility. Helm sits alongside equipment within a facility. For example, the automation system still interfaces with the branding devices exactly as it did prior to the installation of Helm. It does, of course, reflect any changes that the automation system requests along the playout chain. This technology allows operators to monitor single or multiple channels and to move effortlessly between pods of channels – issues can be resolved far more quickly. The technology works remotely, as Helm panels installed in a facility can control equipment in another city. Helm is now integrated with Ross Video’s OpenGear protocol as well as Snell’s RollCall. It now works with equipment from Miranda, Harris, Pixel Power, Snell, Ross, Nevion, Lynx, Axon, Evertz, NVision and Omneon, as well as supporting industry-standard protocols for router and server control, such as VDCP. n

AW: We have announced a number of significant partnerships recently in EMEA … we are working with Globecast, who is strengthening its playout offering by deploying the latest version of our K2 Edge Smart Playout Center. At the London games this summer, Grass Valley partnered with a number of broadcasters and service providers, including Russia’s NTV-Plus, Brazil’s TV Record, and Estonia’s ERR, we helped capture and produce historic moments in sports. With more than 200 cameras, three dozen production switchers, 30 replay systems, and tightly integrated file-based workflow solutions in place, we supported our partners in reaching new heights in live and studio production which was extremely rewarding. InB: Thank you for taking the time to answering our questions.

Take Pratt, Technical Director, Rascular Control With Helm By Roddy
Broadcasters and playout providers, probably more so than ever, are now able to select the technology they want. This, combined with the fact that previously largely ‘static’ devices are now empowered by the introduction of IT thinking – glue technologies being a prime example – means there’s huge choice. However, this appearance of choice is somewhat illusionary once the issue of control and monitoring is raised. If each and every best-ofbreed solution requires a separate hardware or software control panel then how can these be deployed across multiple channels effectively? How can an operator be expected to rifle through a swathe of interfaces to access the precise function required? The irony is that greater technology choice is leading customers down the path of the single vendor option for all their primary equipment, with the promise of a unified control system, minimising the number of protocols involved. Even with the best of intentions, many vendors are not control and monitoring experts – solutions can be half-hearted or outof-date. So, why should customers be forced to relinquish real choice when it comes to equipment selection? Rascular designed Helm to solve this issue, as many broadcasters around the world – including the likes of Discovery Networks Europe, BSkyB, ESPN and Red Bee Media – have recognised. Helm solves the problem

Helm offers up a more unified operator experience

that broadcasters and playout providers constantly face: wanting to purchase best-of-breed technologies from multiple manufacturers yet not wanting to use all the associated, proprietary control/monitoring technologies. Helm allows set-up and on-air control of these remotely from a single PC screen. Users can define their own control panels and complex single-button workflows. Helm is a fully user-configurable, PC-based application that provides either mouse-driven or touchscreen control and monitoring via TCP/IP of a wide range of essential broadcast equipment: Branding devices, routers, video servers, VTRs, multiviewers and modular gear. Operators can use
