must-see venues With their special architecture and stunning locations around the UK, these impressive listed buildings are packed with history and well worth a visit Spectacular Eltham Palace, Greenwich This is one of the few important medieval royal palaces in England to survive with substantial remains intact. Initially a moated manor house with vast parkland, it was acquired by the future Edward II in 1305, who subsequently passed it on to his queen, Isabella. Today, Eltham Palace is Grade II on the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest, and is open to visitors throughout the year. In 1999, English Heritage completed a major restoration project to bring the mansion back to its former glory and as a result, it is one of the great art deco design classics today, with distinctly glamorous and stylish interiors. Its juxtaposition against the Tudor Great Hall, which remains as impressive as in the days of King Henry VIII, makes it a really unique experience for visitors, young and old. Its stylish design has provided the setting for films and TV series, including Bright Young Things and Brideshead Revisited.
