And it was the special stories behind the food that made the new inaugural series of Simon Cowell’s latest TV offering, Food Glorious Food, so heart-warming to watch. After all, there’s much more to food than measuring ingredients or precise presentation; it’s the memories certain dishes evoke, or 086 | JUNE 2013 the way one mouthful can make you feel at home. From old-timers to cross-dressers, greengrocers to Yorkshire pudding makers; the competition was aimed at budding cooks eager to impress. HOW IT WORKS RETRO RECIPES THE SHOW FEATURED SEVERAL ECCENTRIC DISHES SUCH AS A CORNISH PASTIE AND BLANCMANGE Food Glorious Food presenter, Carol Vorderman, toured six regional locations along with the judges, the latter choosing their favourite from that particular area. Then, after much deliberation, the judges selected one contestant’s dish from each different location to be showcased in the semi-finals. When it came down to crowning a winner, it wasn’t the judges’ decision; it was the British public’s. Six competitors were whittled down to two finalists, who then had their dishes trialled in stores nationwide, with thousands of tasters casting votes for their champion. The winner got to see their dish stocked in Marks & Spencer stores all across the UK – as well as receiving a tasty cash lump sum of £20,000.
