D espite the ongoing recession, cruise holidays are proving to be increasing in popularity – according to the Passenger Shipping Association (PSA), 835,000 took a cruise holiday from a UK port last year, an increase of 28% over the last two years. Travel experts say that cruises are gaining in popularity because they provide more ‘bang for your buck’ than other package holidays. The average cruise holiday costs around £1,000 per person but that includes all your food, entertainment and the chance to see numerous cultural sites in one go. The stress of thinking about getting to different locations is taken away, because the big boat will do the hard work for you. You just sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. 268 | JUNE 2013 What you get On any cruise trip, there is an abundance of food, swimming pool facilities and, at the very least, a gym, so you can try and work off some of the many meals you are undoubtedly going to tuck in to. There is always evening entertainment, too, from quizzes to cabaret, to discos and nightclubs – choose your cruise carefully so you don’t end up on a holiday for the more mature, when you are a party animal or vice versa.
