Statistical analysis
Generalized linear model (GLM) multivariate analysis of variance (ANOVA) with Bonferroni post hoc
testing was used to test for association of NK cell percentage and NK subset levels, with treatment as well
as association between NK subset level and disease
activity measures. Covariates included in the analysis
were age, gender, time on treatment and age at onset.
A p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. p values are unadjusted for multiple comparisons and thus should be interpreted with some
caution given the number of tests performed.
Results
We examined 110 relapsing-remitting patients, 31
patients were on natalizumab, 24 on fingolimod, 15
on glatiramer acetate and 22 on beta-IFN. A total of
20 of 22 patients were using high-dose subcutaneous
beta-IFN. Only two patients were on weekly intramuscular IFN beta-1a. Eighteen patients were not on
treatment at the time of blood collection. The cohort

consisted of 78% females; the median age was
44 years. The median disease duration was 11.8 years
(Table 1).
Only 38% of our patients were classified as nonactive over the observed time period according to the
NEDA criteria (Table 2). A total of 43% of patients
suffered a relapse during the observation period, 30%
of patients had MRI progression and 17% experienced EDSS progression.
A total of 18 patients were not on treatment at the time
of blood collection. Of those 18 patients, 7 demonstrated MRI progression. Four untreated patients had
not undergone MRI during the observation period,
and their MRI data could therefore not be analysed for
NEDA.
Almost all patients (94.5%) had an MRI available in
the observation period. A total of 88.2% (97 patients)
underwent MRI brain and cervical spine; 6.3% (7
patients) had MRI imaging of brain and full spine,
1.8% (2 patients) had MRI imaging of the brain only
