SAFE AND SOUND? The security of data and processes lies at the very heart of outsourcing – but is your organisation doing enough to protect itself and its partners? F amously, “the strength of a chain is its weakest link” – and with a huge variety of potential threats probing weak links in the chains binding an organisation together, trust in the robustness of a provider’s security structures and processes is more crucial than ever to the success of outsourcing relationships. Those threats can come from both outside – in the form of individual cybercriminals or, potentially, corporate agents or even state-sponsored bodies – and inside the business; they can be conscious (intended as theft or malicious damage) or accidental (the archetypal “USB stick left on the train” scenario). But within the outsourcing space they all have one thing in common: they threaten the reputations, and finances, of both buyer and vendor. If the threat to the buy-side is perhaps more immediate, in the long run that to the vendor base is probably more existential – for who would willingly hand over business-critical data and processes to a provider with a track record of failing to safeguard such assets? Over the next few pages, Outsource correspondents look at how IT security issues impact on today’s international sourcing space: how providers are working with buyers to keep defences tight against increasingly sophisticated cyberthreats – and reacting to new legislative and commercial drivers whilst keeping down costs.
