Formanek on Pharma Kay Formanek is Executive Partner for Accenture Life Sciences in EALA, and a keen observer of the way companies in the pharma and life sciences space are leveraging outsourcing to generate savings and increase value. We spoke with Kay about some of the key trends driving change in the industry now and going forwards. outsource: Kay, thanks for joining us. Pharmaceutical outsourcing is a very big space: in fact, is there anything in pharma that isn’t outsourced? Kay Formanek: Well, if I look across our client base what is certain is that not all clients are outsourcing everything. Some clients are much more aggressive in the outsourcing space than others. But, if one looks at the value chain of a life-sciences company, there are not many firms that are not at least partially outsourced. For example, we have a number of clients that do a lot of outsourcing in the domain of research and development – so product safety, monitoring of the reports, clinical data management, clinical development activities. A client that we are now working with has outsourced some of the analytics. And certainly within the commercial operation you will see more and more players looking to outsource their call centres and some of the market segmentation analysis. Generally there is more outsourcing – but I think the life sciences have not been leaders in outsourcing. o: Why do you think that is? KF: I think there would be three factors that I would talk about. Number one, I think that it has been an industry with fairly high margins, and has been less cost-conscious. So the retailing companies and the consumer goods have been the pioneers in a lot of outsourcing, because they are looking at margins from three to seven per cent. Now, though – especially in the area of patents – there is a lot more cost-focus from governance, and you see pharmaceutical companies really taking this seriously. The world’s 20 biggest pharma companies had combined revenues in 2008 of very nearly half a trillion dollars.
