To The Barricades? Deborah Kops is a true sourcing legend, with hands-on experience as buyer, vendor and advisor (not to mention Outsource Editorial Board member). Now, her latest venture sourcingchange.com is building up a full head of steam – and as her choice of title suggests, she’s seeking to bring about genuine change in the outsourcing industry? Did we say “change”? Make that “revolution”… outsource: Deborah, how happy are you with the state of the outsourcing space at the moment, in terms of the successes – or otherwise - that outsourcing is delivering for business? Deborah Kops: I have been in this business since 1996, a very long time... it’s an industry in constant evolution, with both buyers and sellers contributing to its growth and taking the lead at certain points of time. For example, from the period 2005-2008, provider expertise drove the adoption of finance and accounting outsourcing, but now clients have had the opportunity to step back, assess the quality and benefits of delivery. It is now the clients’ turn to lead. Our industry is also fairly aspirational. Some of the promises that were being made early on in the mid-Nineties have not come to fruition, probably due to the notion that providers don’t know yet how to deliver them, and that clients don’t know yet how to manage their organisations to ask for and implement some of the features that we have been talking about for some time – for example, outcome-based pricing, still in the main an aspiration. We’ve been talking about multitower or “bundled” outsourcing for some time, hollowing out the organization and sending enabling functions to a provider; we have been talking about so-called utility outsourcing for a long time. All in all, much aspiration. And that’s a good thing. Probably the most notable thing about outsourcing – particularly BPO – is Deborah Kops’ latest venture can be seen at www.sourcingchange.com - and you can read her columns every month on the Outsource site at www.outsourcemagazine.co.uk 28 ●●● www.outsourcemagazine.co.uk http://www.sourcingchange.com http://www.sourcingchange.com http://www.outsourcemagazine.co.uk http://www.outsourcemagazine.co.uk
