PoWer to the people W EnErgy is a massivE industry, and whEthEr in oil, gas or thE fastgrowing rEnEwablE industry, thErE arE plEnty of jobs out thErE Oil and gas ithout energy our lives would grind to a shuddering halt and we’d all have to eat sandwiches for the rest of our lives and scrabble about in the dark. The sector is a crucial part of this country’s infrastructure and employs over 530,000 people and it is believed that around 14,000 people are expected to be recruited into the sector in the next 10 years. There are several different sectors in this industry, from oil and gas to electricity and renewable energies, with thousands of opportunities for rewarding and fulfilling careers. Oil and gas provide energy and essential chemicals for our transport, industry and homes, providing three quarters of the UK’s primary energy and providing employment for 380,000 people. The UK oil and gas industry is located mainly off the east coast of Scotland and England, but fields have also been developed in the Irish Sea, west of the Shetland Islands, and in the English Channel. About 18,000 people work offshore on a regular basis on fixed production platforms and mobile drilling rigs. The type of jobs on offer in this industry include the following: Exploration and production – job opportunities exist at every level from surveying and analysis to more specialist jobs like drilling and electrical, chemical and mechanical engineering.
