Rogers Communications Opts
For Quantel At City Montreal
R

ogers Communications has
purchased a Quantel Enterprise
sQ news and sports production
system for its new HD City Montreal
channel, to serve the Quebec region
of Canada.
Rogers is in the midst of
constructing studio and production

facilities in downtown Montreal with
an on-air date in mid-August.
The schedule will be a locally
produced BT (Breakfast Television)
mor ning news programme,
complementing the nationwide lineup of BT six other studios. Rogers
also plans to add a one-hour sports
news programme
to the schedule.

The City Montreal system
includes 200 hours of HD storage.
File ingest is handled by two sQ
Load applications, scheduled and
video recordings with sQ Record,
and playout is controlled with
Quantel’s sQ Play.
Journalists and producers can
review and cut edit all stored
media, including live ingests, via
20 sQ View desktop applications,
fully integrated with the Autocue
Newsroom Computer System and
Ross Overdrive Automation.
Craft editing is handled by three
sQ Edit seats – also integrated
with the NRCS.
Four QTube Browsers connect
journalists and editors countrywide.

LiveU Allows VG To Expand Online Content

successfully expanded its
live video content use via the
deployment of LiveU’s cellular
uplinking technology.
The VG newspaper group is using
both multiple LU60s (backpacks)
as well as LiveU’s new mobile app
solution LU-Smart. This app allows
customers to extend their live video
coverage from the ﬁeld using an
iPhone or iPad.
Based on LiveU’s fourthgeneration bonded uplink technology,
the LU-Smart bonds internal Wi-Fi
and cellular connections, including
3G/4G LTE, to reach optimal
video quality.
VG TV Technical Manager Pal
Hansen said: “LiveU allows us
to go live from the field almost

anywhere in an affordable way
without the need for a satellite truck.
With LU-Smart, we can view and
play with live content in new and
exciting ways. We use the LiveU
technology for both live content
and the playback of “as-live” clips
via store and forward to the control
room. We are very happy with the
LiveU technology and the support
from their partner Avit Systems.”
VG used two LU60 units as well as
the iPhone technology at the recent
World Skiing Championships in Italy.
Feeds from press conferences
and interviews with Norwegian
skiers were transmitted back to
the control room in Oslo then on
to the website.
VG has also installed an Ubuntu
server for the live iPhone feeds.

Loeb Targets
Sony For Split
USA: Hedge fund billionaire Daniel S
Loeb has called for a breakup of Sony.
Loeb is reported as calling for
Sony to spin off its entertainment
division that includes one of
Hollywood’s largest film studios.
Urging Sony to “focus”, he wrote:
“We are conﬁdent that by acting as
partners, Sony will grow stronger.
Loeb’s hedge fund has acquired
a stake of around 6.5% in Sony
worth around US$ 1.1 billion.
Sony, which posted its ﬁrst annual
proﬁt in ﬁve years, asserted that
while it welcomes investors, the
entertainment division is deﬁnitely
not for sale.
