screens based on the features they
need. Two people who perform
the same job can have completely
different interfaces that each one has
tailored by adding widgets, resizing
windows and creating multiple realtime views of their work.
One user may have a calendar,
a report dashboard and a jobs-inqueue screen, and be able to close
one of those functions and drag
personnel onto the same screen
quickly for overtime rules. The
ERMa application enables disparate
ScheduALL systems to connect
and accelerate project workflows
throughout the content creation to
distribution supply chain.
SintecMedia’s OnAir broadcast
management system combines
traffic, sales, promotions and
programming in a single framework.
OnAir’s new Remix/Reweight
tool allows sales planners to
recalculate and compare audience
rating impressions for targeted
demographics as part of the
advertising proposal process.
OnRights, a licensing management
system, can be fully integrated
with OnAir or implemented as a
standalone system. It was designed
for media companies interacting
with a range of rights, platforms,
territories, formats, currencies
and languages. Users can view
contract terms from a single screen,
manage inbound and outbound
rights, follow comprehensive rule
enforcement for a broadcaster’s

stock, determine real-time access
to rights availabilities, and track
material fulfilment. OnRights enables
broadcasters to maximise the use
of their content libraries as well
as reduce the costs of managing
contract rights by managing all
licensing related activities within a
single system.
Joining OnAir are SintecMedia’s
SIMS, Medea and Nestor products.
SIMS provides programme and
rights management between stations
or between stations and multicast
channels. Medea facilitates the
optimal management of affiliate and
retransmission revenue for networks
and station groups while Nestor
manages programming expenses
for multichannel operators.

SintecMedia’s OnAir system combines traffic,
sales and programming
system. SI

Media’s TV Traffic software
integrates and streamlines content
management, airtime scheduling
and media trafficking within
a single system to transform
business efficiency.
The system has a client/server
structure centred on a Microsoft
SQL database. This allows a
practically unlimited number of
users to access the management
server where all relevant data can be
entered, saved and modified. Used
together with SI Media automation
systems, it enables new and existing
broadcasters to achieve more
efficient workflows.
VSN’s MAM is designed to simplify
management of production and
archive storage through a single
web interface. The company’s
VSNExplorer now includes
single web interface that allows
collaborative editing.
It also offers new facilities for
automatic and XDCAM and P2 file
ingest to shared storage. Additional
features include drag and drop
directly to third-party video editors. A
new configuration tool for parametric
metadata management allows
creation of multiple metadata layers
which can be easily modified by the
administrator. In this way different
cataloguing types can be applied to
the same asset, depending on its use.
Xytech’s Fuse offers the ability to
interface with other systems across
a network or via the internet. An XSLT
(Extensible Stylesheet Language
Transformations) data transformation
capability is included, allowing
developers and integrators to pull
transformed data from MediaPulse
using extract/transform/load)
strategies. Fuse also now offers the
ability to create orders remotely in
any other MediaPulse system.

resolution than 1920 x 1080 pixels.
Content capture at 4 kilopixel image
width will soon be within affordable
reach of practically every freelance
video cameraman.
Given the continuing decline
in data storage costs, archiving
material produced at 4K and
beyond should be no great challenge.
Many producers will appreciate the
freedom to employ digital cropping
during the editing process, selecting
specific areas of 4K content for 1920
x 1080 delivery.
By the time the delivery
infrastructure is in place to transmit
4K to the home, video camera
resolutions well beyond 4K will be
within affordable reach, allowing
digital cropping to become a
permanent part of the video
production toolset. The only point
worth arguing is whether terrestrial
and satellite delivery will remain
viable transmission channels in
a world of ultra-high definition
television services or fall into a
second-class category behind
ever improving global internet
connectivity.
Who needs 4K, let alone 8K?
Anyone and everyone with normal
human vision. Ultra-high definition
is not just about massive display
screens. It allows a final break
from the visible pixels that spoilt
practically every video display prior
to the introduction of the ‘retina
quality’ Apple iPhone and iPad.
I recently tried a Sony wearable
video visor employing dual 720p
OLED screens. The experience
was interesting but, as one might
expect, the pixels looked almost
the size of housebricks. Wearable
video displays will soon be as
commonplace as cellular telephones
- to which many of them will be
connected. Resolutions higher than
720 and 1080 will then be essential.
Resolution independent
production and transmission
will be the central element of
television broadcasting in the
coming decade.

Resolution Independent
One certainty looking to the future
of broadcast systems management
is the need to handle programmes
and clips arriving in much higher
