The Next Generation Of Collaborative
Media Production Technologies
Governing electronic media production workflows challenge any producer or production facility
regardless of the type of content or the company’s profile…

he introduction of consumer
technologies in professional
p r o d u c t i o n h a s l e d to a
multiplication of video and file
formats and a proliferation of
content repositories. Software
is expected to achieve very high
standards in terms of usability and
interaction logic, including the use
of mobile and social media.
The impact of this paradigm shift
on media production infrastructure
can hardly be overestimated and
imposes a number of challenges that
go beyond the capabilities of many
technology suppliers. In particular, it
is increasingly difficult to enable a
truly collaborative process and to
fully exploit the creative potential
of a production. The key to turn
this challenge into an opportunity,
irrespective of whether the
underlying infrastructure is corporate
or distributed and differentiated, is to
understand the meaning of content,
and to ensure quick and appropriate
access when needed.
Over 90% of the audiovisual
material used for professional
purposes is controlled by
unstructured information contained
by human-friendly documents,
which makes this type of content
hard to manage and production
processes susceptible to errors.
Meanwhile, massive social networks
have emerged overnight, multimedia
has become ubiquitous and mobile
and cloud computing are setting the
new business standard. This leaves

Limecraft’s Digital Media Flow

producers facing the dilemma
whether their records management,
content discovery and compliance
obligations can be defensively met
using legacy systems, or whether
they should leave the beaten
track and help themselves with a
hodgepodge of alternative tools.
As such organisations are driven
to reconsider best practices, to
replace legacy systems in favour
of increasing productivity and
of new creative opportunities,
Limecraft proposes a radically new
approach optimised for maximum
interoperability and collaboration.
To counter this, Limecraft has
developed Flow, a secure online
platform to handle any type of
video and file format. By a unique
combination of embedded metadata
and semantic technology, Limecraft
ensures that media files remain selfdescriptive and that content remains
retrievable indifferent of the size of
the database or the number of active
users. As a side effect, content
is intelligently routed between
existing repositories and creative
professionals, thus creating a very
secure and productive environment.
By using Limecraft Flow, creative
professionals get the most efficient,
secure and complete solution
currently available on the market.
Limecraft identifies the key issues
associated with digital media
production, and explains how
producers can increase their creative
output by using proper tools, that
integrate their earlier investments in
digital production technology.

The Digital Paradox
The main issues when using
conventional IT infrastructure in
a professional media production
facility, boil down to the ability to

Limecraft’s Flow platform can handle any type of video and file format

manage vast amounts of digital
media. As audio-visual material
is not self-descriptive, machines
rely on human interpretation,
i.e. complementary descriptive
text contained by various sorts
of documents depending on the
particular format (feature film,
documentary), to enable system
integration, retrieval of content and
eventually creative collaboration.
However, due to the human
dependency during creation and
management of master data,
document-oriented workflows are
a potential source of errors and
they inhibit collaboration potential.
For example, in feature film, the
main document to describe the
structure and the content of the
audio-visual product is the script.
Upon approval, the production
assistant breaks down the script
to make up a shooting schedule.
During production, original footage
is logged using a continuity report,
effectively linking each shot with
the script. After post-production,
archiving content requires a
considerable additional effort to
consolidate all available information.
In reality, reuse of content relies on
cumbersome and time-consuming
research and de facto lots of
valuable content is lost.

time ensuring that the application
is compatible with all common
file and video formats, and that it
enables smooth export to any postproduction software.
Finally we made sure all
participants in a production are using
the same up-to-date information by
implementing a paper-less workflow
throughout the entire production.
As a side effect, users of Limecraft
Flow benefit from a very high level
of automation, thereby increasing
productivity.
All applications that make
up Limecraft Flow have been
designed for maximum efficiency
from production to post-production.
The key to this capability lies
in understanding the complex
relationships between media
originating from different sources.
For example, the system recognises
material fragments by associating
original footage, edited clips and
distributed material with the original
newswires and scripts.
The cost of inventory taking
(material logging or archiving) is
thereby reduced by up to 50% and,
due to the superior accuracy and
consistency of computer generated
tags and annotations, material
is easier retrieved during postproduction later on.

File-Based Collaboration
Taking into account the challenges
associated with digital media
p r o d u c ti o n, L i m e c r a f t h a s
developed Flow. Limecraft Flow is a
versatile and paper-less alternative
to make sure that media files are
routed in the most efficient way
from production to post-production,
and to make sure everyone in the
production ecosystem uses the
same up-to-date information.
To achieve these objectives,
Limecraft has set the following
design requirements. First of all, the
system is running in the Cloud, to
ensure maximum accessibility and
remote use. Striving for maximum
interoperability, we spent a lot of
