HOUSING IN THE HOUSE There's more to housing than bricks and mortar; this is an industry that can take you to the heart of the home – the people T he majority of you live in one, grow up in one, and move from one to another, but how often have you thought a house could provide you with a career too? Of course, it's usually not just a single house, but working in housing – whether it be a block of high-rise flats or a county's council manifold properties – can prove a varied path, bursting with potential for career progression. Currently, 242,800 people work in the housing industry, and along with facilities management, property planning and cleaning and support services, represent 3% of the total UK workforce. Demand for skilled workers in this sector isn't showing signs of waning, either. In fact, unless 300,000 to 330,000 new homes are built every year, the UK will be unable to meet the current demand for homes (with two million too few homes available), according to a report from the Future Homes Commission. The report also revealed that Britain needs a “housing revolution” to meet this demand, and what does a large-scale revolution require? Plenty more employees, of course... 147
