DESPITE affirmations that the UK has re-entered recession and employment rates are looking poor, Britain has enjoyed a jobs “boom” according to a recent study. The Jobs Economist said that 2012 was the best year for employment growth since 2000, and things are looking up. (Even if this growth was teamed with a squeeze on pay and a fall in labour productivity). Director of the Jobs Economist, Dr John Philpott, said: “With the UK economy at risk of a triple dip recession, around 10,000 public sector jobs being shed each month and 2.5 million people unemployed, it sounds odd to suggest that we've just been through a jobs boom.” We've scoured social media, pillaged the papers, and hotwired the web: all in the name of hunting down the latest employment news that may affect your job search. The coming year will see an increase in the number of graduate jobs being created. According to a study by High Fliers Research, top employers plan to hire 18,306 graduates in 2013, which is a 2.7% increase from last year. Almost half of employers surveyed plan to hire additional graduates in 2013, with a third maintaining their 2012 intake levels. The largest growth areas will be retail, the public sector and engineering. The top employer of new graduates in 2013 is Teach First with 1,260 vacancies, closely followed by consultancy ﬁrms PwC and Deloitte, both planning to take on 1,200 grads. The report also cautioned that graduates without work experience will struggle to land a job after university, regardless of how well they achieved academically.
