good Start For cuShaliNg power Cushaling Power peaking plant has had a very successful start to its commercial life in the Single Electricity Market (SEM). It has produced almost 3,000 MWhr of electricity in 2011. This is comparable to the output from the Bellacorick wind farm (5,300 MWhr), but well shy of the 350,000 MWhr produced by the peat/ biomass unit at the Edenderry site over the same period. This is as expected, as the main purpose of the peaking plant is to provide fast-acting, rapid-reserve response, and its capacity factor year to date at 1% is exactly as anticipated. The main revenue earned by the plant in the SEM is for the provision of this reserve capacity. It is the plant’s availability to run that is the critical metric in terms of its financial performance. The 99% capacity factor delivered to date in 2011 has ensured that the plant’s revenues remain ahead of budget expectations. The Windfarm projects at Mount lucas and Bruckana are progressing well from a procurement perspective, with detailed technical and commercial discussions progressing with a shortlist of suppliers. A contractor is about to be appointed for the Timahoe landfill remediation project and competitions for Cleaning Services, Corporate Travel and legal Services are underway. Procurement continues to support Feedstock in sourcing increasing volumes of suitable biomass for the Edenderry power station. Negotiations are ongoing with a shortlist of suppliers for an MBT (Mechanical Biological Treatment) waste separation plant at Drehid. This year, we may also be utilising a new plastic film supplier from Turkey for stockpile covers, as a back-up source with access to Asian polymer raw materials pricing. We are also working with Fuels on trials of polypropylene coal bags from a number of suppliers. Cube Printing from limerick has recently been appointed as the single source of all printed material, with significant value being achieved from a top quality supplier. new FireMagic products Following on from the launch of FireMagic FireMaker last season, the product development team are busy working on expanding the range for the forthcoming season with a view to hitting the shelves late Autumn - early Winter. Fuels’s intention is to broaden the offering in the convenience channel and to develop products that move away from kerosene-dependency, particularly in the firelighter category. laNdFill levy to riSe Significant increases in the landfill levy are on their way, according to the Minister for Environment, Phil Hogan TD. The levy is expected to increase from €30/tonne at present to €50/tonne in September 2011 and €75/tonne by July 2013. These increases are a serious challenge to the waste management industry to accelerate investment in landfill-alternative technologies. Resource Recovery’s approach is twofold. We will continue an aggressive rollout of Brown Bin for Organic/Food Wastes to commercial and domestic customers. This source segregation will allow for diversion of these wastes to composting and recovery. Secondly, we are continuing to progress our mechanical biological treatment (MBT) plans. MBT will allow for large, industrial scale mechanical separation of residual waste, with the organic fraction going for composting or anaerobic digestion and the synthetic fraction used as a raw material for the production of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF). www.bordnamona.ie Source | 5 buSiNeSS rouNd-up Procurement progress http://www.bordnamona.ie
