unique aRtist’s peRspective on peatlands wild”; “let it become a lake, a reservoir or a marsh since there are already fish in the silt ponds”; and “leave one metre of peat in the bog so that trees can grow.” the idea to develop a site action - a trial plot for growing blueberries in a partially cutaway area at Ballydermot - took shape. Meetings with a Bord na Móna ecologist, land manager and environmentalist enabled Monica to transplant 39 blueberry bushes from an abandoned project to the trial plot. her work comes out of this triangular process of painting, conversation and site action – its intent is to draw viewers to a poetic space in which to reflect on the constant tension between making a living and taking care of a finite resource. plot 1/ceapach 1 artist’s book was launched during kildare readers’ festival by Dr. catherine farrell (Bord na Móna) at the riverbank arts centre, newbridge. it includes photographs of the site actions, the paintings and an essay, ‘collective consciousness’, by Maeve Mulrennan, visual arts officer, galway arts centre. plot 1/ceapach 1, the artists’ book, is curated by Maeve Mulrennan and edited by fiona fullam. it is available for €8 or by post for €10. enquiries to Monica de Bath, rath studio, rathangan, co. kildare. t 086 349 6793. e monicadebath@eircom.net Project uPdate An image form Plot 1/Ceapach 1 a rtist Monica de Bath enjoyed a temporary art residency at Ballydermot works, one of Bord na Móna’s last mechanised sod peat production facilities in the country. walking the site with workers, they spoke about potential futures for the cutaway – with a particular focus on this local site, which may be cut away in ten years’ time. suggestions for future re-use by the workers have been “to leave the cutaway go Responsible and sustainable approach to peatland urged last December, the international peat society (ips) published the strategy for responsible peatland Management as a basis for a more sustainable approach to the use of peatlands, whether for agriculture, conservation, forestry, peat extraction or rehabilitation. over 120 non-governmental organisations, research institutes, industry associations, peat-producing companies and various other entities interested in peat were involved to varying degrees to ensure that the strategy would be broadly based and cater for the maximum possible number of viewpoints. the strategy states that peatlands should be managed responsibly by focusing on biodiversity; hydrology and water regulation; peatlands and climate change; economic activities on peatlands; after-use, rehabilitation and restoration; education; engagement of local people; and good governance. at a recent ips conference in Quebec, this strategy for responsible peatland Management was discussed in the context of sustainability and the emphasis was placed on communicating this message to various stakeholders. log on to www.peatsociety.org to access the full strategy document, which can be downloaded for free. in the meantime, the european peat and growing Media association (epagMa) has developed a code of practice consistent with the strategy. this obliges member companies to behave in a responsible manner in all aspects relating to the preparation, use and after-use of industrial peatlands. www.bordnamona.ie Source | 21 http://www.peatsociety.org http://www.bordnamona.ie
