Is am specialta í an Nollaig agus gúim beannachtaí na féile ar mo chomhleacaithe go léir agus ar a muintir. I am delighted to wish you and your families a happy and contented Christmas. As the year draws to a close, it's a good time to look back and take stock of the past 12 months and the challenges we face as we move into 2014. The pensions dispute has consumed a huge amount of time and effort at all levels in the organisation. This has been a very difficult time for all of us. I am happy that a potentially very damaging strike has been averted and I welcome the LRC brokered settlement. I believe that we need to work together to refocus all our attention on the core challenges facing ESB. Our Corporate Strategy to 2025 drove activity across ESB during 2013, with some key achievements across all areas of our business. Huge progress has been made on the construction of Carrington Power Station, near Manchester, which is on track to go into commercial operations in 2016. At 880MW, Carrington will be one of the largest power stations in ESB's portfolio, and its development is a cornerstone in our strategy to compete as a player of scale in the integrated Ireland/GB market. The growth of our renewable portfolio continued during the year with the opening of Carrickatane Wind Farm in Northern Ireland and Betws in Wales. We also started work on Woodhouse Wind Farm in Co. Wexford. ESB Networks and NIE continued to lead the development of Ireland's future energy system through significant investment in critical energy infrastructure. Our innovative work in areas such as smart grids, electric vehicles and emerging generation technologies is helping to establish Ireland as a hub for green energy development, and reaffirming ESB's position as Ireland's leading energy company. We have already installed over 1,200 EV charge points across Ireland and we Pat O'Doherty Top stories in brief ESB retains Business Working Responsibly Mark ESB was one of the first four companies to be certified by the NSAI to the Business Working Responsibly Mark, achieving a score of 76%. The Mark is Ireland's only certification for responsible and sustainable business practice. Drive your motoring costs down Significant savings are on offer for those who choose to switch to an electric vehicle in 2014. ElectricAid launches joint appeal for the Philippines and Syria ElectricAid is once again appealing to our members, friends and supporters to reach out to the suffering people of the Philippines and Syria. African Hub officially opened in Johannesburg ESB International established an official presence in South Africa with the opening of a new office in Johannesburg, in response to growing business in the region. Carricktane wind farm opening welcomed Colum Eastwood, MLA, has welcomed the opening of the multi-million pound Carrickatane wind farm in County Tyrone, a key part of ESB's wind development programme. Contact Support Services From December 10th, your new way of accessing Staff Services will come into operation with the launch of a new Intranet site. Staff move from Osprey House to Finglas and Leopardstown ESB Networks staff have successfully completed the move to Finglas and Leopardstown Road after 33 years in Osprey House. issn no. 0790-7508 We wish all our readers a happy and peaceful Christmas. are leading two European smart grid field trials, funded by the EU under the FINESCE project. Meanwhile ESB International continues to fly the flag for Ireland around the world, with major new contract wins in Turkey, Oman and South Africa. Electric Ireland went from strength to strength in 2013, firmly establishing itself as a top consumer brand through world class products and services, supported by targeted advertising and sponsorships. Powering Kindness in particular was a resounding success, with over 45,000 acts of kindness being logged over a single week in aid of charity. Even Stephen Fry got in on the act, tweeting his support for Breakthrough Cancer to his 6.4 million followers! In October, ESB became one of just four companies to be reaccredited with the Business Working Responsibly mark, an independent affirmation of our sustainability and corporate responsibility performance. I am very conscious of the great efforts that people have gone to right across ESB once again this year, often in challenging and difficult circumstances. In particular, I'd like to pay tribute to the staff of NIE, assisted by ESB Networks, who battled blizzards early in the year to restore power to over 150,000 customers affected by some of the worst ice and snow storms in recorded history. Tragically, the deaths of Shane Conlan and Oisín Crotty, two young apprentices working with ESB Networks, were felt deeply across ESB during the year and reminded us all that we can never be complacent when it comes to safety. These two young men were highly regarded colleagues and I again extend my sincere condolences to their families and colleagues on their untimely deaths. I ask you to please remember them this Christmas. I wish you all a peaceful and safe Christmas. http://www.esb.ie/em
