ESB INTERNATIONAL THE OFFICE WAS officially opened at an event hosted by Paul Farrell, Business Development Manager for ESB International in Africa on Monday, November 11th. It was attended by Joe Costello TD, Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, who was in South Africa on an Enterprise Ireland Trade Mission. The office will act as a hub for ESB International's operations in all of Southern and Sub-Saharan Africa where the company has been operating since the late 1990s. ESB International has already worked on a number of strategic projects for the South African energy company, ESKOM, and has completed or currently has projects underway in countries, including: Lesotho, Mozambique, Malawi, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Namibia, Botswana, Benin, Burundi, Cameroon, Gambia, Ghana, and Kenya. The new office will be headed by Paul Farrell, who has over 30 years of experience in the power industry, 12 years of which was spent working in South Africa. n Martin Heavey, Manager Strategic Consulting Group, ESB International signing on behalf of ESB International, together with Omar Al Wahaibi CEO, on behalf of EHC. ESB INTERNATIONAL SIGNED a new consultancy contract in Oman with the Electricity Holding Company SAOC (EHC). ESB International is required to develop a comprehensive blueprint design for the delivery of improved customer services by the five regional distribution and supply subco's owned by EHC on behalf of the Sultanate. Later, ESB International will help each of the five implement this within their respective organisations. The Project Manager is John Traynor, Senior Consultant with ESB International. The contract involves delivery of over four man-years of expertise. In pure consultancy terms, this reflects the large scale of the challenge facing Oman's electricity retail sector to significantly improve its customer service performance, ahead of possible competition. ESB Group's experience in depth in successfully implementing change in Ireland and for overseas clients was a major factor in winning this contract. ESB International is currently setting up a new branch in Oman. n n ESB International at the Asia Pacific Business Forum 2013 The seventh annual Asia Pacific Irish Business Forum was held in Kuala Lumpur on October 10th and 11th to coincide with the Asian GAA Games event. n Innovation Ireland Forum The forum, hosted by Silicon Republic and co-sponsored by ESB, brought together leaders from government, academia, engineering, technology and investment to discuss the innovations that are required to deliver sustainable solutions for the economic challenges of the 21st century. ESB presents at two major ocean energy events in Edinburgh THE TOPIC OF emerging ocean energy technology and its potential was the subject of debate and discussion at two major international conferences in Edinburgh in November this year. ESB participated in both events. The European Ocean Energy Association took the step of bringing their annual conference outside Brussels on a roadshow to Edinburgh, likely to be repeated in Ireland in future years. John Fitzgerald, Emerging Energy Technologies addressed the conference on the status of the ESB WestWave project, in particular site selection activities and the procurement process necessary for such a novel precommercial project. The conference keynote speech was made by Greg Barker, Minister for Climate Change. Collaboration across the EU was a significant theme of both conferences and ESB's WestWave project provides an excellent opportunity to play host to such a collaborative effort. It is a leading European project with plans to deploy wave devices off the Brendan Barry, Manager Emerging Energy Technologies speaks at the World Ocean Power Summit in Edinburgh. Ireland's distribution grid infrastructure close to the Atlantic Ocean resource has the potential to be a key enabler in taking technology from single device testing to multi-device wave energy arrays in Europe, which would be a world's first. n The world Ocean Power Summit also took place in Edinburgh in November and Brendan Barry also in the Emerging Energy Technologies group provided a similar update to delegates. Presentations were also given highlighting the recent progress from leading wave and tidal technology device developers where the testing of prototype devices continues at the marine ocean energy test centre in the Orkney islands and elsewhere. http://www.esb.ie/em
