Carrickatane wind farm opening welcomed 8 Colum Eastwood, MLA, has welcomed the opening of the multi-million pound (approximately £34m) Carrickatane wind farm in County Tyrone, a key part of ESB's wind development programme. ESB Trading Excellence through People Accreditation 8 ESB Trading was recently awarded the Excellence Through People (ETP) accreditation by NSAI. Colum Eastwood MLA launches the wind farm at Carrickatane with ESB Executive Director Generation and Wholesale Markets Paddy Hayes. Visitors at the event enjoyed a tour of the wind farm. THE NEW WIND FARM will power the equivalent of over 12,000 homes and is one of 17 wind farms ESB has in operation across Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, England and Wales. Contracts with Northern Ireland businesses accounted for over 30% of the total investment in the site. Of this, £1 million was invested in the immediate vicinity of Carrickatane, with over 40 local companies providing services to support the development of the site. ESB also announced that it will launch a new community fund linked to the Carrickatane wind farm, worth over £20,000 per annum to the local community. Welcoming the investment, Colum Eastwood commented that the project represents an important step in Northern Ireland's efforts to reach its target of 40% of electricity to come from renewable sources by 2020. He said: "The development of Carrickatane wind farm will help us to achieve our carbon reduction targets. It will also help to ensure our energy independence in the years ahead. This project by ESB represents a significant investment in the region and I look forward to hearing details of the new Carrickatane community fund in the coming months". Speaking on the benefits this has had for the local area Paddy Hayes, Executive Director of Generation and Wholesale Markets at ESB, said: "Stretching back to 1927, when ESB was first established we have always sought to make an active and positive contribution to the communities in which we operate. I'm delighted that the development of the wind farm has brought much-needed investment and employment to the region. To date we have spent over £1m on locally quarried materials and over 40 Northern Ireland companies, many based within the immediate vicinity of the wind farm, have also been providing a variety of products and services. Through the annual community fund of £20,700 we will continue to sup- port and invest in the local community in the months and years ahead". "The opening of the wind farm not only highlights our continued commitment to support the Northern Ireland economy but also our resolve to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050." "ESB's wind development programme runs across Ireland and the UK and we have 17 wind farms operating to date, four of which are based here in Northern Ireland, with another four being developed. Through these we look forward to creating cleaner power using sustainable generation for the betterment of everyone within our society," he added.  ESB's four operational wind farms in Northern Ireland include Hunter's Hill, Crockagarran, Curryfree and Carrickatane. Of the four other Northern Ireland wind farms in development the site in Eglish, near Claudy, received planning permission in August this year. Asset Management continued improvements ASSET MANAGEMENT AUDITING commenced in Generation in May 2013. The Asset Management audits are a tool to help ESB Generation continuously improve the asset management processes and to facilitate the achievement of business objectives. Audits review the central asset management process and check its implementation and operation in Head Office and Generating Stations. Typical audit examples are operation of the trip management process, the development of the Critical Asset Register, and compliance with the Standard on Maintenance of Medium Voltage Switchgear (PGTS 24/05). The audits need to determine whether the Asset Management system operates in accordance with the agreed Asset ManThe audits will reflect positive findings, which can be shared as well as scope for improvements and nonconformances. The outcome of the audits will provide information to management and will be reviewed in the Asset Management review. The audit team within ESB Generation is made up of Audit Manager Grainne O'Shea, as well as eight trained auditors and all roles are on a part-time basis. Examples of those deliverables include a local induction process, a business planning process and communication and learning and development policies.  ESB Trading sees that the work done in preparation for this accreditation as a key step in a journey of operating in a way that ensures that people are always at the centre of the Trading business, which is in line with one of its core values. Thanks to everybody within and outside of Trading who helped and encouraged in the attainment of this accreditation. Gerry MacFarland retirement Gerry MacFarland retired from Coolkeeragh Power Station on October 8th after almost ten years in the company. Gerry has been a great ambassador at the station in the implementation of the safety systems and in mentoring his colleagues. Alan Campbell, Plant Manager and all the staff at the Station wish Gerry and his wife Joy the best in his retirement. Gerry (centre) is pictured at a presentation to him on his last day with his colleagues Malcolm Burns and Campbell Wade from his Operations Shift Team. THIS STANDARD GETS organisations to look at their people as a key resource of competitive advantage thereby resulting in business success. Adhering to it will help ESB Trading achieve many business improvements by having different services, tools, techniques and materials in place to help the team do their day-to-day job, while being able to focus on learning and development in line with the business challenges and objectives. To reach the standard a number of criterion had to be met across business planning and continuous improvement, effective communication and people engagement, leadership and people management, planning and evaluation of learning and development, HR systems and employee well-being. ESB Trading was well positioned by virtue of the fact that it is part of ESB, which already has many significant people-centric services and supports in place. Since ESB Trading was established in 2011 the team had also implemented a number of things that were in line with the standard e.g. Trading Communications Forum, Trading Health and Well-being Committee and Trading Vision and Values. However, to reach the ETP standard there was a gap which the Trading ETP team worked hard to fill over 'Be Safe, Be Seen' Page 21 Pictured (l-r): Dan Byles MP, member of the Parliamentary Energy and Climate Change Select Committee; Michael Fallon MP, Minister of State for Energy and Minister of State for Business and Enterprise; and Paddy Hayes, G&WM Executive Director.
