Photo: Michael Downey LOVE & ROBOTS has been announced as the winner of the 2014 ESB Spark of Genius Award, one of the most established awards for Irish Start Ups at the Web Summit. Now in its fifth year, the ESB Spark of Genius Award is recognised as Ireland's most prominent startup competition with past winners including SmartThings, recently acquired by Samsung for a reported $200m, Viddyad and Datahug. Love & Robots began their journey with thirty other start-ups ranging from consumer sentiment apps, online fashion retailing, social gaming, a hospital communication app and Bitcoin security for banks, all of whom pitched to a judging panel during the preliminary rounds in September. Beating off stiff competition, Love & Robots made it through to the final round at the 2014 Web Summit, along with TenderScout and Restored Hearing. After an intensive pitching round, Love & Robots was announced as the winner of this year's ESB Spark of Genius Award, receiving a cash prize of €25,000, plus a fund of Top stories in brief Safety Structure Review EM spoke to Colm de Búrca, ESB's Safety and Sustainability Manager, about the review of our safety organisation throughout the company. Marina Celebrates Cork's Marina Generating Station has been in existence for 60 years - when the plant was commissioned in 1954 its 30MW sets were the largest to be installed on the system and their dual-fired coal/oil boilers represented state-of-the-art technology. Launch of the PMO Project Management Development Programme Designed around the PMO Framework, the programme will cover all project management and change management activities relating to the successful delivery of IT investments in ESB. All three finalists battled it out with unique and engaging business pitches at the grand final, which played out on the "Builders" Stage at the RDS in front of an audience of thousands of leading international start-ups and technology investors. The final judging panel included Marguerite Sayers, Managing Director of ESB Networks, Don O'Neill, VP of Engineering, Operations & Infrastructure at TripAdvisor, Aditya Argawal, VP of Engineering at Dropbox, Grainne Barron, Founder of Viddyad, Bill Archer, Managing Director, Business at Eircom and Eamonn Russell, Partner at KPMG. ESB's Marguerite Sayers said: "The companies that have pitched embody the entrepreneurial spirit that exists in Ireland today, where innovation underpins our economic resilience. ESB is delighted to foster and develop this culture by sponsoring the Spark of Genius competition". The ESB Spark of Genius Award focuses on high potential technology start-ups and was open to any Irish start-up which has been in operation for less than three years and has received under €1 million in funding to date. Entrants were judged on the uniqueness of their idea, their level of development thus far, and their potential for future growth. Within ESB, staff are themselves involved in the 'Little Big Things' campaign which is also fostering big and small ideas geared towards making a positive impact on the business. New technologies, products and services are among the goals in the stories emanating from this campaign. An internal awareness campaign is currently underway which highlights the type of innovations put forward. See feature on page 9. ESB has also announced a 3-year partnership with the Science Gallery and to celebrate this event a number of Makeshop Workshops took place in schools around the country which were hugely successful.
