SAFETY WEEK AT G&WM
Marguerite Sayers, Generation Manager, and the Generation Operations Safety Committee kick off Safety
Week in Moneypoint.
Grainne Coogan, from the ESB Road Safety
Bureau, leading a talk about advanced driving.
G&WM RAN A WHOLE host of activities during ESB's Safety Week over
the course of European Safety Week
(20th-24th October), under the theme
of 'Healthy Workplaces Manage
Stress'. Here's a just a flavour of what
took place:
* On the Monday morning of Safety
Week, Marguerite Sayers, Generation Manager,
welcomed the initiative at
the Generation Operations
Safety Committee meeting
held in Moneypoint, which
everyone across G&WM was
invited to attend via Lync.
* On the same morning, all
G&WM staff received a text
message, asking everyone to
'take time-out for Safety'.
* Aware held a number of talks
about 'Positive Mental Health at
Work' in Head Office, Aghada and
Turlough Hill.
* Pieta House also held a presentation
on mental health in Moneypoint.
* The ESB Road Safety Bureau and
NIFAST held a number of talks
we asked all G&WM staff to 'Step
Back for Safety', using supporting
materials that incorporated the Safety
Leadership Framework and its four
pillars to help local discussions about
how we can all improve safety in our
day-to-day work.
Overall, we've received very positive feedback from people who atat
tended the various talks and presentapresenta
tions held by G&WM during this week
of raising safety awareness. Many
thanks go to everyone who contributcontribut
ed to making it such a success - both
attendees and presenters. n
across various locations during the
week about advanced driving.
* The RSA also presented to Trading.
* A number of Lync presentations on
risk perception, safety rules and line
managers' safety responsibility also
took place.
Finally, on the Friday,
GWM SMT safety
leadership workshop
in progress.

Lee staff reach
new heights
ON 24TH SEPTEMBER, the staff
at Lee Stations completed an emergency 'rescue from a height' exercise from the crest gate gearbox
platform. The dam at Inniscarra
has many areas where working at
height is required and so the safe
rescue of staff or contractors is crucial in the event of an emergency.
The area is almost 40 metres above
the River Lee and six metres above
the dam wall walkway.
During the exercise, the Lee staff
used the necessary equipment and
worked together to bring the 'injured person' to the walkway below,
which allowed for safe transportation of the casualty.
This was a worthwhile training
exercise which has provided the Lee
team with the necessary skills and
competence to carry out the procedure, in case an emergency happens.
Well done to all those involved. n

Aghada's occupational
first aid course initiative

DURING OCTOBER and spanning
European Safety Week, Aghada station ran occupational first aid courses
free of charge as part of an ongoing
collaboration with community organisations. Margaret O'Connor,
who coordinates training activities
for the station, observed an opportunity with fully paid-up, unfilled
occupational first aid places. This
provided Aghada with an ideal
community collaborative initiative involving local school staff,
GAA clubs, first responders and
others.
Staff were asked to nominate worthy community organisations and
the response was overwhelming.
The feedback from the initiative,
which was facilitated by John Doogan
of Safe Aid, was very positive, with
participants grateful for the opportunity to gain an important life skill and
allowing Aghada station to give more
back to their local community. n
Group Internal Audit visit
Woodhouse Wind Farm
In October, members of ESB's Group Internal Audit visited Woodhouse 20MW Wind Farm in Co.
Waterford, which is under construction. A site tour and project presentation was conducted by Niall
Colman, Site Mechanical Engineer. The Internal Audit team viewed the Nordex turbines (8 x 2.5MW) and
the IPP and TSO substations. At the time of their visit, the turbines were undergoing mechanical and
electrical fit-out and substation commissioning was ongoing. Also on-site (and pictured) were members
of the Generation Finance & Commercial teams (Carmel Moore-O'Leary, Una Clarke and Susan Cahill).
