Key sector International trade Local businesses in Yorkshire and the Humber are keen to grow and create further jobs but the flat domestic economy offers them limited opportunities, so expansion via international trade is high on the agenda. More companies than ever are looking to foreign shores for fresh opportunities. The weaker pound makes deals more attractive to overseas partners, plus there is a growing desire across the globe for quality Yorkshire brands. Europe is by far the region’s main trading partner. Fewer businesses export to the emerging markets of China and India. Fewer still have grasped the opportunities in South America. Then there is South Africa, and the emerging economies of Eastern Europe. The list goes on. Yorkshire’s leading exporters include leading names from the steel manufacturing sector such as South Yorkshire’s Tata Steel and Sheffield Forgemasters. The diversity of Yorkshire’s export economy was perfectly demonstrated at Insider’s Yorkshire International Trade Awards in May. Rotherham technology company S3 ID beat off several bigger competitors to clinch the Grand Prix title. It makes safety location systems for the oil and gas industry, and has established a presence in most of the major oil-rich regions around the world. Other winners included Bradford-based sealing product maker Klinger and seals manufacturer Aesseal. 13
