THE FASTER THE
SPEED THE BIGGER
THE MESS
By Grainne Coogan
2.
"We should never say or think 'it
won't happen to me'. The sad reality
is that it does. Crashes or collisions
happen in milliseconds and we again
ask that all road users listen to the
numerous road safety messages that
An Garda Síochána issue. They are in
your interest and that of your family,
friends and colleagues."
The words of Assistant Commissioner
John Twomey of An Garda Síochána,
following the St Patrick's Day Bank
Holiday weekend. 2,377 Fixed Charge
Penalty Notices for speeding were
issued to drivers over the weekend,
from March 14th to 17th 2014
inclusive.
Speed continues to be the biggest
contributing factor to road deaths in
the Republic of Ireland, and it falls to
each of us individually as drivers to
reduce our own speed and be mindful
of our ability to react when behind
the wheel.

WHAT'S NEW?
LOOKING FOR YAM
By Dave Washe
CHAMPS!
SOCIAL MEDIA in the ESB
workplace? Never! Well you're
wrong... sort of. Yammer is
the SM app of choice for ESB
workers to interact with one
another. It is an ESB staff
member only forum which
simply means that the forum
is limited to ESB staff only.
Soft launched recently, there
are currently 429 members of
staff using it. You can use Yammer on the web or download
the appropriate app for your
smartphone. You do have a
smartphone now, don't you?
Signing up is simple because
the good IT people have saved
you the bother of remembering usernames and passwords
so you just use your normal
ESB logon details.
So what can you do once
you are on Yammer? Well
more or less the same as you
can do on that other major SM
app, Facebook. You can Like,
Share, Reply, etc. and it is an
excellent place to see what's
happening around ESB. Person
to Person email is there as well
and for private conversations
there is an instant chat facility.
You can even Follow your colleagues to see what they are
doing which looks like it was
plucked straight from Twitter.
There are discussion groups
you can join or better still set
up. It's a business collaboration
tool that used wisely could allow you tap into the powerful
companywide resources in
ESB and the family of companies. Post a query and wait for

the help to arrive. It is a simple
to use app that could help you
out and put you in touch with
the right person to solve your
particular problem.
Let's just all hope we don't
fall into the trap of trying to
get the most followers currently held at time of writing by
SC... you'll just have to join
to find out exactly who that is.
In summary, Yammer, an
overdue tool for ESB staff
that used properly could make
your working life that bit
easier. n

Some simple facts worth
remembering:
* Stopping and braking distances
Preception time: 0.7 seconds
At 120km in a saloon car in dry
conditions it will take 78m to stop
At 120km in wet conditions it will
take 145m to stop - that's the
length of Croke Park
* There is no road in Ireland on
which you can legally drive at
more than 120km per hour
* Speeding - Two penalty points
on driving licence plus a fine of
between €80 to €120. If you opt
to go to court and are convicted
you risk four penalty points and a
fine of up to €800 (any driver who
gets 12 penalty points at any time
inside a three year period faces
disqualification from driving for six
months). n
ESB ROAD SAFETY
BUREAU SPEED POLICY
All ESB staff that drive shall
adhere to the legal speed
limits on Irish roads.
Remember that these are
maximum limits and that
the appropriate speed may
be much less depending
on circumstances and
weather conditions. Adjust
your speed to take account
of road standard, vehicle
capabilities, weather and
traffic
conditions.
In
particular, decrease speed
considerably on wet or
icy roads. Maintain a safe
distance between you and
the vehicle in front - use the
'two-second rule' as a guide.
It is the responsibility of
all staff that drive on ESB
business to plan the journey
and allow sufficient time to
complete it safely.
Be mindful of the
speedometer,
of
the
weather conditions and of
the road layout.
Reducing your speed is your
way of keeping yourself and
other road users safer.
