23 Energy International April/May 2012 www.esb.ie/em to submit the draft marine renewable standards to be voted on by the 22 countries participating in their development by early summer 2012. if accepted, the standard then becomes a published international standard available for use by the marine renewable industry. the project team also elected a new team leader while in dublin. Us-based Jonathan Colby of Verdant power new York City will take up the role after the standard is accepted and published. the team also took the opportunity of being in ireland to visit strangford lough to see the 1.2MW seagen tidal energy converter in operation. Joe MacEnri from EsBi, who is part of the iEC team pointed, out that over 20 of the iEC project team meetings have been conducted using EsB’s Webex system, avoiding 250,000 miles of air travel and accruing significant carbon savings! n Moneypoint passes emissions milestone page 29 New marine renewable standards Pakistan contract extended drafted in ESB International Pictured (l-r): Bill Rawlings, Canada; Russell Stothers, Canada; Jeremy Thake, UK; Joe MacEnri ESBI, Jonathan Colby, USA; Phillip Daus, Germany; Henry Jeffrey, UK; Ed Richards, UK; Jarlath McEntee, USA. ESBI EsB intErnatiOnal recently hosted a two-day meeting of the international Electrotechnical Commission (iEC) project team responsible for developing new marine renewable standards to define how the power perform- ance of tidal energy converters will be measured and reported. during the meeting, the team considered comments and suggestions from various national committees around the world who had examined the second draft of the international standard issued by the iEC team in september 2011. the team expects ESB International has signed a five-year extension for the Operations and Maintenance of Rousch 412MW Power Plant in Pakistan. Managing the risks of flexible power plants Amorebieta Power Plant Manager Roy Reid, who delivered the paper. Managing tHE risks associated with flexible plant is a key concern for investors and operators seeking to maximise plant availability and performance, according to roy reid, plant Manager of EsB’s amorebieta power plant in spain. speaking at powergen Middle East in Qatar, he was referring to the process of shutting-down a power plant during peri- ods of low system demand (such as overnight) and re-starting it when demand increases, also known as ‘two-shifting’. “a major consequence of increased competition in the electricity sector is that power plants that were originally designed to operate at base load are now compelled to operate on a two-shifting basis. this is becoming an increasingly common requirement for Combined Cycle generation technology (CCgt) plants, causing headaches for plant owners and operators, whose plants were de- signed for constant generation,” he said. “although the rationale for this is clear in terms of demand, two-shifting can have considerable technical and commercial implications that need to be carefully managed.” EsB currently operates two of the plants in its fleet on a cycled basis and has first hand experience of managing the risks and costs associated with this type of operation. the paper, which was co-authored by EsBi’s danny ahern, set out some of the key risks and considerations for operating plants on twoshifting basis and how these should be managed. n ESB International MD Ollie Brogan with His Excellency, the Irish Ambassador to Vietnam, Damien Cole and Paul Duffy of ESBI at the networking event. ESBI at Enterprise Ireland Vietnam Networking event ESBI EntErprisE irEland recently hosted a Vietnam networking event in dublin. the aim of the event was to strengthen the irish proposition for Vietnam through networking. the event was attended by the irish ambassador damien Cole, who is based in Hanoi, and who confirmed his interest in supporting trade between the two countries. Cathy Holohan, Export Market advisor, indian and asian Market, Enterprise ireland welcomed feedback from the participants present, in particular where Ei could assist companies.
