Brighter mornings, longer days, daffodils and lambs all remind us that spring has well and truly arrived. We are constantly impressed at the standard of images that we receive so keep up the good work and continue to forward us your photos for consideration. We had a huge response and we were overwhelmed by the talent out there. the entries will be used as inspiration by the graphic designers in the development of an overall final logo for WasteWatchers. the winners of the prizes will be notified shortly with the results being published in the next issue of the em so watch this space! in the meantime WasteWatchers will be watching you so take care and bin it right, if you are not sure, ask! remember the three rs: reduce, reuse, recycle. n Tracheostomy Awareness Group 60's, 70's, and 80's by Last Orders My son John was born on 21st July 2005. John had difficulty breathing Kevin Doyle as Elvis Buffet Dinner Super Raffles with Amazing Prizes at birth and a lifesaving procedure involving the insertion of a plastic tracheostomy tube was performed when he was two-weeks old. Thankfully, John made a full recovery and the procedure was reversed when he was 10 months old. As a result of this experience, my wife, Isabel, and I have become very involved in the Tracheostomy Awareness Group (TAG), which is made up of parents of children who have or have had tracheostomies and of staff from Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin, and the Childrens University Hospital, Temple Street. The group offers help and support to families of children with tracheostomies, of whom there are currently 53 in Ireland. A child with a tracheostomy needs 24-hour care to survive and for the families of those children there are many difficulties involved in keeping them safe when they eventually get to leave hospital to go home. If a tracheostomy tube blocks or becomes dislodged the carer has just three minutes to replace the tube to ensure the survival of the child so, as you can imagine, it is a very stressful and difficult situation for families. At present there is no national fund available to provide nursing care in the home for these children so parents are completely dependent on their own resources. We are organising a fund raising dinner dance for ENT Department, Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children on 28th April 2012 in Westmanstown Garda Club. The proceeds will go towards respite care and nursing for families of children with tracheostomies. We would be very grateful for any support you can offer by way of sponsorship or donations towards the event.
