What the labels actually mean! page 33 Help children in Calcutta Launch of Fleet Drivers’ Handbook and recommencement of Advanced Driver Training 8 The new ESB Fleet Drivers’ Handbook was launched by ESB Networks Managing Director Jerry O’Sullivan who used the occasion, on Tuesday March 1st, to announce the recommencement of the Advance Driver Training programme at ESB Leopardstown. THE launCH of the handbook was supported by the road safety authority and rsa director michael rowland praised and thanked EsB for the initiatives and for the continuing joint EsB/rsa achieving road safety Excellence campaign. The purpose of the handbook is to ensure that staff who drive EsB fleet vehicles are aware of, and have access to, EsB’s safe driving policies. a number of policies have been developed and implemented already by the safe Driving Bureau, such as policies on seatbelt use, mobile phone use, vehicle cleanliness and security, and these are consolidated in this booklet for ease of reference for drivers. The handbook details what is required of EsB drivers in terms of their journey, vehicle and driving behaviours, as well as emergency advice and what to do in the event of being issued with a traffic offence. other advice and guidelines are also included in the booklet, for example, on driving on snow and ice and on general safe driving practices. all drivers of fleet vehicles will receive a copy of the booklet and should familiarise themselves with its contents. It should be carried in-vehicle, as part of the site and Workplace safety folder (sWsf), and consulted as required. There is a pull-out motor accident report form in the centre of the book and a perforated Bump Card at the rear of the book. These facilitate the EsB policy that all collisions must be reported to your supervisor and your local fleet & Equipment (l-r): Tom Reilly, Public Safety Manager; Gus Connolly, Safety & Quality Services Manager; Jerry O’Sullivan, MD, ESB Networks Ltd. and Dominic O’Brien, Safety, Quality & Environment Manager. To sTarT from the beginning, my name is Cathy Howlett – I am 24 and the daughter of Colm Howlett – 37 year veteran of EsB/ EsBI. The mission (as I have chosen to accept it) is a 10-week placement in Calcutta with a wonderful and inspiring Irish charity, suas, which works with and through communities in the poorest parts of India and Kenya to provide quality schooling to vulnerable children. suas aims to reach as many of these children as they possibly can and, through their volunteer programme, young people like myself are offered the chance to go and help them in their great work. I was thrilled to be offered a place in the sabuj sangha team, which works with poor children living around the railway line of Calcutta, bringing them into centres run by suas and their partners, in the hope of accelerating their learning to the point where they can eventually join mainstream education. In order to take up my place in this programme, I have to raise €2,950. This covers my accommodation, flights and insurance – I will pay the cost of my own living expenses when I am in Calcutta, and will work, unpaid, as a teaching assistant, for the duration of my stay. I have organised a number of fundraisers to raise the money. my lovely EsB veteran father has offered to shave his head in the hope of raising some money for me. What I ask of you, reading this piece, is to think if you could spare a few euro to sponsor my dad’s head-shave so that I might be able to go and help those that are really in dire straits. Thank you. n Should you require any further information, please contact Colm Howlett on 0876895854 Donations can be made to Breffini Byrne, Facilities Department, ESBI, Stephen’s Court, 18 – 21 St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2 or online through my mycharity.ie page at: www.mycharity.ie/event/cathy_ howletts_event/ Any funds raised above the participation fee will go directly to the schools in India and Kenya. Jerry O Sullivan tests the simulator. (l-r): Conal Bonnar, Manager, Fleet and Equipment, Michael Rowland, Director of the RSA and Jerry O’Sullivan, garage immediately. The handbook was developed in consultation with Driver focus, www.driverfocus.ie, experts in helping employers to proactively avoid collisions and to manage safe driving for work. There was also consultation with members of the safe Driving steering Group, the safe Driving Bureau, fleet drivers and safety and Technical support supervisors (sTsss) from EsB networks. The handbook is now being distributed to drivers of fleet vehicles, predominantly across networks, but also in EsBEI. If you drive a fleet vehicle and have not yet received a copy of the fleet Drivers’ Handbook, please con- tact your local sTss. a Private Drivers’ Handbook is currently in production and will be published later this year. since it was launched in 2004, the EsB’s safe driving programme has been a great success and has build on its reputation as a best practice safety employer: there has been a 60 per cent fall serious collisions involving fleet vehicles and EsB’s motor insurance premium is 15% lower than it was in 2003. The aims of the current threeyear achieving road safety Excellence strategic alliance with the rsa include: having zero fatalities to staff, contrac- tors and members of the public as a result of EsB driving activities; reducing all types of collisions among the commercial fleet and assisting the national road safety effort to reduce injuries and deaths on Irish roads. n For more information on Advanced Driving, contact Eimear Hogan, telephone 01 4631719 ext. 43819, email eimear. hogan@esb.ie.
