By Katherine Thorne book review The Holy City By Patrick McCabe Published by Bloomsbury Price €10.50 It Is the 1960s in a town called Cullymore somewhere near Dublin. Changes are afoot, and not just in Cullymore. the whole of Ireland is changing dramatically. CJ McCool, the protagonist, is the son of Lady thornton, a Protestant married woman, and her Catholic lover. the woman’s Protestant husband, henry thornton, is understandably not impressed. therefore, as a baby, CJ is sent to a foster mother called Dympna McCool. Dimpie, as she is popularly known, rears him in the shadow of the manor house where the thorntons live. Dimpie brings him up lovingly as a Catholic. But his origins are not hidden from him. his mother and a friend of hers visit him regularly in Dimpie’s house. After Dimpie’s death, CJ inherits a secure home. he becomes a small farmer and sells eggs about the town. he is relatively affluent and very much a child of the culture of the sixties. he makes friends. some are good for him, whereas others get caught up in the emotional maelstrom of his development. his circumstances are difficult. these arise out of his personal history and the contradictions existing in Ireland’s social and religious confusions. Furthermore, he becomes mentally ill. During his time in st Catherine’s mental hospital, he makes at least one good friend, but the psychiatric therapy leaves a lot to be desired. Many of Ireland’s mid-twentieth century problems are explored in the holy City. the Catholic/Protestant divide, with all its social prejudices, is explored. the encroachment of popular culture on Catholic conservatism is there. this is not, however, a depress- ing book. Despite the problems it deals with, it manages at times to be funny and entertaining. the timeline is not linear, which can be confusing at times. Nevertheless, it is a good read. n http://www.esb.ie/em
