Hello and welcome Many thanks to you all for completing the Readers’ Survey and we are very pleased with the overall positive feedback. It made interesting reading and we will be taking on board many of your suggestions. We bring you the main findings in this issue and they are extremely positive. Your taking the time to complete the survey will also benefit ESB ElectricAid, as we will make a donation of €2 for every survey completed. With the good weather and longer evenings appearing, gardening, walking and holidays are to the fore. In this issue, we hope you will finds lots to interest you on these subjects and keep you busy in the weeks ahead. Don’t forget the Sligo Walk is also coming up on Saturday, May 7th (see ESBNet for details). Most of you will have been in training for some time now to get fit and ready for this 30k walk but remember there are a number of walking clubs in various locations around the country with lots of ESB members so check them out. The Irish Blood Transfusion Service is calling for people to consider becoming platelet donors. Platelets are small cells present in the blood of all healthy people and essential for clotting. More than 25,000 platelet donations are needed in Ireland each year to treat patients who are seriously ill. About 90% of platelets collected are now needed for cancer patients. Platelet donation is a special type of blood donation, where just the platelets are collected and the donor keeps their red cells and their plasma. “Demand for platelets in Ireland has increased by 50% over the past five years, largely because of the number of new cancer cases, and this demand is going to increase steadily,” says Dr. William Murphy, National Medical Director of the Irish Blood Transfusion Service. “Committed donors are essential to the supply of blood and platelets in Ireland.” Platelet donations take place in the National Blood Centre, in the grounds of St. James’s Hospital, Dublin 8 and in the Munster Regional Transfusion Centre, Douglas Road, Cork. New donors are always needed, so please contact the Platelet Clinic on 01 432 2833 or visit www.giveblood.ie for more information on becoming a donor.
