Cook up a storm in your kitchen this winter 31 Health & Habitat, page 32 Runner focus no.1 8 John Healy, National Masters Champion 1500m RunneR Focus is a new feature from the Athletics’ club highlighting an esB athlete. This month the focus is on John Healy from esB corporate centre who won Gold in the recent national Masters championships finals in Tullamore. John completed the 1,500m final in 4:32.74 after progressing to the final from regional and provincial heats. 1. John, what made you take up running? I took up running at school to help improve my football fitness and I’ve had the running bug ever since. 2. What motivates you to keep running? There is a terrific camaraderie among runners. I have been running with esB colleagues for 30 years. nothing beats the feeling of well-being, zest and satisfaction that running brings. I find that running actually returns more energy to you than it takes. 3. Who is your favourite athlete? sonia o’sullivan for her persistence regardless of set backs. 4. What brand of running shoes do you wear and how often do you change them? AsIcs Kayanos, which I change every six months. 5. What are your top running tips? Whether it’s once a week or 14 times a week, it must be every Award winner: John Healy, ESB Corporate Centre. week, so get a routine going. The main thing is to enjoy it and set yourself specific goals. 6. What is your usual race preparation? A week before a race, I reduce the distance and number of runs, but maintain the intensity of each run. I don’t change diet, but try to avoid alcohol! 7. What injuries have impacted your running? I have been lucky so far – I tend to get football injuries rather than running ones! 8. What was your favourite race? This goes back to 1983 when I ran the last leg of the prestigious 60k national Bahrain Relay. I was part of a 17 man esBI team that included Dermot Byrne (now ce of eirGrid), Vincent Flynn and Brian cronly. I managed to snatch victory on the finish line. 9. What has been your greatest running achievement? This year I won both the indoors and outdoors national masters titles. 10.What is your running ambition? To continue enjoyable runs with colleagues and friends. The winning ESBI mens’ team. esBI Won the esB Men’s All-Ireland Football sevens by defeating a gallant cavan outfit by a score line of 3 - 9 to 2 – 4 in Páirc uí chiaráin Athlone on saturday september 11th. The ‘Player of the competition’ was Paul clancy, the former Galway player, who was outstanding for esBI and was well supported by James Finn, eoghan o’callaghan and callaghan Ahearne. cavan were tough opponents with everyone giving their all, especially Johnny Mcconnell, Hugh Birt, Ray Brady and Frank McPhillips. A special thanks must go to all the teams who participated in the Men’s competition: Dundalk, naas, cavan, esBI, esBIG, HG cables, eirGrid and IcT. Full credit must be given to Athlone GAA club for the immaculate condition of their pitches, dressing rooms and their overall facilities. At a presentation dinner later that evening in the shamrock Lodge Hotel, Athlone, the winning and runners up teams were presented with the esB cup and medals by esB GAA club President Paddy stapleton and esB GAA chairman colum Grogan. Paddy paid tribute to all participants and special thanks to the organising committee on the day colum Grogan, John o’Riordan, Hugh connaughton, christy Goulding, Tony Heavin, Trish Mcelvaney and cathy o’sullivan - for making the occasion such an entertaining and enjoyable event. colum Grogan expressed his gratitude to esB as without their help this annual event could not take place. He thanked the participants and Athlone GAA and the shamrock Lodge for their excel- lent services and hospitality. The two finalists of the sevens will now combine and go forward to meet their northern Ireland counterparts, nIe Powerteam, for the Annual 15-a-side cross-Border Football Match for the Ted Dalton/ Pat shavron cup. This year the event is to be held in Belfast with the date yet to be arranged. Lady luck THIs yeAR saw the ladies footballers of eirGrid, esBI and IcT play out a round robin series, with esBI and IcT contesting the final. An outstanding display of football and teamwork were the foundation stones for esBI’s victory. All three participating teams produced exciting matches. The final was a very close encounter in which the esBI girls discarded their underdogs tag to defeat IcT on a score line of 1 - 3 to 1 - 2. niamh Murphy was a real dynamo at midfield for IcT ably assisted by Deirdre Feeney and Rose Griffin. shauna Brady and colette Mahon marshalled a strong defence. esBI made better use of their limited scoring opportunities and some magnificent saves from their Ladies’ ‘Player of the Tournament’ ciara Dolan ensured their hard won victory. esBI were also well served by caroline Gallagher, orlath Harney and niamh Holmes.
