Irish Hydro data was commissioned to undertake the assessment and a hull-mounted Acoustic Doppler current Profiler (ADcP) transect survey was carried out during the summer. Measurements of tidal speed and direction were taken from Fair Head to torr Head, and early indications show a good tidal resource suitable for deployment of tidal technology. the survey took place over two weeks and captured both the neap and spring tides. the vessel used, causeway Explorer, was contracted by Irish Hydro data from a local company in Ballycastle and is licensed by the Maritime coastguard Authority. EsBI Engineering solutions’ environmental services managed the procurement and supervision of the contract on behalf of EsBI ocean Energy and the initial site selection process also. EsBI will submit a bid to the crown Estate for a lease of the seabed in 2011 along with Mct, the technology developer of seagen, a 1.2 MW tidal turbine located in strangford lough. this competitive process will be initiated following completion of the strategic Environmental Assessment for offshore wind and marine energy by the Department of Enterprise, trade and Investment, northern Ireland. EsBI has also applied for funding to partner with Queen’s university, Belfast in tidal resource Modelling to enhance its understanding of how arrays of devices will work in the Antrim coastal environment. Foreshore licence applications for a similar assessment of wave resource at five sites off the west coast of Ireland have been submitted. EsBI is supporting sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland by providing owner’s Engineer services on the wave test facility off Belmullet and has a technology partnership in place with WaveBob. EsBI has also entered an agreement with one of Europe’s largest electricity utilities, Vattenfall, to develop wave energy projects off the west coast of Ireland. By focusing on developing wave energy projects off the west coast of Ireland and tidal energy projects in northern Ireland, EsBI ocean Energy will help deliver not just EsB’s target of 150MW of ocean energy by 2020, but also the Irish and northern Ireland Governments’ targets of 500MW of Wave Energy and 300MW of tidal Energy by 2020. n Chemical spill Generation Operations, page 28 exercise in Poolbeg ESBI Bahrain staff with visitors. Consultancy contract extended in Bahrain ESBI As consultAnts to Bahrain’s Electricity and Water Authority (EWA), EsBI is once again engaged in the Kingdom’s electrical transmission development. the company signed a consultancy contract extension worth €3.5m during a recent visit to Bahrain by EsB Energy International Executive Director Pat o’Doherty, EsBI Engineering solutions Manager ollie Brogan and EsBI consultants Key Accounts Manager for Bahrain Paul Murphy. the contract is to provide design and site supervisory services for eight 66/11kV substations and associated underground cables. EsBI is currently undertaking its largest number of projects ever with the EWA as part of Bahrain’s 20072011 220kV transmission Development Programme, which will provide for a 30% increase in installed capacity over three years and which will enable the Kingdom to maximise the use of power from the new Ad Dur 1200MW IPP power station. ongoing projects include new trans- Above: Signing the contract at EWA Head Office. EWA chief Executive Dr. Abdulmajeed Al-Awadhi congratulated EsBI on its services, which have enabled Bahrain to keep up with its growing demand for electricity, with capacity growing by 10% a year over the last five years. n ESB Networks and ESB International graduate engineering rotation 2010 ESBI As PArt of EsB’s commitment to develop its engineering capability, a new initiative has just been launched that allows the company to leverage the full range of engineering work and experience available across its individual businesses in order to provide an even broader development for graduate engineers that have been recruited to EsBI and EsB networks. the initiative involves the structured rotation of five networks graduate engineers to EsBI and five EsBI graduate engineers to networks as part of their Development Programmes. the rotations commenced on Monday, september 6th and will be for one year. During that period, the engineers will maximise their learning by increasing their business awareness, safety, design, commercial, contractor management and project management skills. In september 2011, the same opportunity will be provided to a similar number of engineers from each business. n (l-r): James Finn, ESBI; Dermot Drew, Networks; Anne Sherlock, Networks; John Martin, ESBI; David Hughes, Rachel O’Connor, Michael Hynes, all Networks; Ollie Brogan, ESBI; Greg Hanna, ESBI; Mike Fitzgerald, ESBI; Stephen O’Reilly, Networks; Michael Fox, ESBI; James Tuohy, ESBI; Caoimhín Ó Briain, Networks; Darrin Mahon, ESBI and John Kelleher, ESBI. http://www.esb.ie/em
