There’s been a lot of attention from neighbours and friends. Most interesting has been the reaction of neighbours who are in the car trade, who are surprised at the performance and response of it. I am enjoying that cheerful ping it gives you on start-up each morning, but even more, the fantastic silence and smooth driving. Freedom from the pump is a great aspect of driving an ecar, because you have your own fuel point at home in the form of an electric charge point that means I can charge at night when electricity rates are lower and renewable generation forms a higher proportion of supply. I am really enjoying driving the ecar and taking part in the trial has given me the opportunity to participate in ecar promotional activities such as the smarter Travel Roadshow in James’ Hospital and school visits, all of which help to support the wider esB ecar awareness campaign. n SPORTSCO SEPTEmBER 2010 DRAW Prize €3,000 €1,500 €1,000 €200 €200 €200 €200 €200 €200 Name, Location Pierce Cahill, Retired Noel Knight, Ballycoolin John Cooney, Retired John Young, Retired James Batten, Retired Kevin Byrne,Vss Tara Hanrahan, westmeath gerard Mahony, Retired Andrew Coffey, Dundalk Fergus Keane, ESb Energy international Sustainability, and ESb ecar Customer Support assistant, Clare McCarthy, at the Smarter Travel Workplace road Show, St. James’ hospital on Wednesday, September 1st. Hello and welcome to the Oct/Nov issue of EM. As we go to press, 36 of our colleagues have completed a two-week volunteer programme in ghana. on this occasion, the location is Kaneshie on the outskirts of Accra. Following on the success of the last two years in refurbishing the schools at the Teshie site, this group set off enthusiastically to take part in the wiring and painting of buildings at this new location. The volunteers were happy to take on the general advice and learning from the previous groups who travelled to ghana in 2008 and 2009. great credit is due to the volunteers who firstly had to raise €2.5k each to cover the cost of their trip. This is not something that is easily done in the current climate, particularly as their colleagues had been called on to help in fundraising in the previous two years. eM will cover the work carried out on this occasion in the next issue, where you will see for yourselves how your donations and assistance have great improved the education opportunities of the children of Kaneshie. This issue is packed with the many activities that have taken place throughout the company in recent weeks. our sponsorship portfolio has been extremely active with events ranging from electric Picnic, gAA, Irish Hockey, Know your Neighbour weekend, guide Dogs for the Blind and Heritage week. we bring you a flavour of a season of intense activity and a sense of the fun and enjoyment enjoyed at the various activities. Michael Bracken received a National Bravery Award recently at a ceremony held at Leinster House for saving the drowning man in March 2005. Michael was driving on Camden Quay with his son when he saw a man go into the river. “I went down the steps and into the river. My Father, Patrick, who founded Bracken’s Bakery, drowned in an accident and I couldn’t get his body out, so to be honest I didn’t think twice about going in,” said Michael. “As a Linesman with esB we’re always aware of safety,” he added. “we’re here to help each other and that’s all we can do.” Michael’s colleagues and friends in esB would like to congratulate him on this award which is well deserved. n RESuLTS OF mADSOC DRAW JuLY 2010 Prize €2000 €150 €150 €150 €150 €150 Name gerard & Adrienne Dunne Aidan Kelly Catherine Bracken Breege Hoban Tom Ryan Karen Davis EM welcomes news, views, articles, letters, photos and feedback on any topic.
