The challenge, organised by Smarter Travel Workplaces, was for teams of both experienced and new cyclists. every time a team member took a 10+ minute trip by bike, they logged the trip on the Cycle Challenge website to earn points for their team. The top five teams were entered into a draw for the main prize, a new bike for each Team Member, kindly sponsored by Trek. An eSB team, Cyclo Six, consisting of Pawel Pociask, Pat Stack, Orla Gardner, Trish Mcelvaney, Tommy hopper and Charlie Cronin were the lucky winners. A prize-giving ceremony was held in the Atrium, head Office on September 2nd and was attended by Dirk hüttermann of Smarter Travel Workplaces, Laura Maher from Trek and Lauren O’Dea of the Department of Transport. n By Fergus keane, Sustainability ESB Sustainability cycling event eSB Cycling Club to arrange events for cyclists and to promote awareness of cycling within eSB. This is part of the head Office work travel plan, which aims to reduce the carbon footprint associated with staff commuting. The theme of the day was ‘complete the circuit, let the energy flow’. An electric circuit enables electricity to flow and for the event we completed a circuit of Merrion Square, symbolising the energy that is present in eSB staff and the enthusiasm that has always been there, and has been building steadily, for cycling as a sustainable means of travel. We gathered for a photo at the Pepper Canister Church after the circuit. eSB has made a very strong statement of its support for sustainable travel and has followed that up with Workplace Travel Plans. it was the travel plan for head Office that resulted in initiatives such as the formation of the Cycling users Group and the eSB Bike scheme, which operates from the basement of head Office and which many availed of during the event. it is a testament to eSB staff’s use of the Dublin Bikes scheme that the company doubled the capacity of its bike station behind head Office, on the first birthday of this super successful scheme, which occurred two days before the Merrion Square event. We would like to thank the eSB Cycling Club, the Cycling user Group, all of those who organised the event, especially everyone who took part and those who are contributing to the sustainability strategy of eSB by getting on their bikes. n eSB CyCLiSTS completed a celebratory circuit of Merrion Square during lunchtime on Wednesday, September 15th. The aim of the event was to highlight and celebrate our progress in the area of sustainable travel and cycling and the huge growth in the number of eSB staff who avail of the government bike scheme, eSB bike schemes and the Dublin Bikes scheme. We want to encourage more staff to do the same! We were very proud to have Mark Rohan leading the event. Mark secured ireland’s first ever Paracycling World Championship gold medal. Before the event, eSB Director of Sustainability, John Campion, launched the Cycling user Group, which will work in tandem with the Above: The lucky winners outside ESB Head Office with John Campion, Executive Director Sustainability. ESB ecars supports Smarter Travel Workplace events eSB eCARS is working in conjunction with Smarter Travel Workplaces, a scheme run by the national Transport Authority to reduce carbon emissions by improving the way employees travel to work. eSB ecars is attending Smarter Travel Road Show events around the country at locations such as St. James’ hospital, Grangegorman, DiT and Letterkenny General hospital. A Mitsubishi iMieV ecar will be on display, encouraging people to consider a more sustainable form of transport when travelling to and from work. n 2010 pedometer challenge every step counts ThiS yeAR’S Pedometer challenge started on Wednesday the 15th of September and runs until Tuesday 12th October. There has been an overwhelming response in eSB. 110 teams (consisting of 627 participants) have registered for the event, far exceeding registrations from other companies ! This year’s Pedometer challenge coincides with electricAid’s Ghana Project. Our eSB challenge is to see if the teams taking part can walk to Ghana and back - without leaving the country ! On a weekly basis we will track our progress on the Sustainability intranet site: http://esbnet/sustainability/ If you have any queries please email sustainability@esb.ie or ring Tommy Hopper (ext 26774) Anita Rock (at ext 26379) Watch out for About the House! Duncan Stewart, presenter of About The House. LOOk OuT for the new season of About the house beginning on RTe 1 in October. The series, which will run for seven weeks, is once again sponsored by eSB. The focus of the programme continues to be on bringing us the most up-to-date in environmental technologies and sustainable design. About the house continues to be one of RTe’s most popular programmes and we got a great response to our sponsorship of the show in 2009. Given our own work in the area of retrofitting carbon vulnerable homes and promoting sustainability, we are pleased to be associated with the show again this year. n http://www.esb.ie/em http://esbnet/sustainability/
