Army Physio officer Within the British Army, a Physiotherapy Officer is “a qualified physiotherapist who can be found providing rehabilitation for injured soldiers and civilians both on and off operations”. As the Armed Forces’ involvement in wars overseas continues, the roster of soldiers injured on and off the field of battle lengthens, and the requirement for qualified and capable physiotherapists grows more and more urgent. For those who have always wished to serve their country, whilst maintaining their chosen career in physiotherapy, this is the perfect option. Physios can be found in action at one of the Army’s UK hospitals or dedicated rehabilitation centres – but they’ll also be seen out in or near the action in field hospitals or Forward Operating Bases, so only those with a cool head under pressure and willing to deal with the heat of battle need apply. Securing a position isn’t easy, however: the Army makes clear that "approximately 60 candidates start the selection process annually for the 4-6 jobs available, making it highly competitive and ensuring that we recruit only the best". Specialist medical jobs It should surprise nobody that prisons contain a higher-than-average proportion of individuals with psychiatric issues ("and that’s just the staff" as the old joke has it). Inmates frequently exhibit a wide range of conditions which, while not considered severe enough to require treatment in a specialist institution, clearly contribute to their inability to act fully within the bounds of legality and which warrant treatment and professional attention during their incarceration. Working as a psychiatrist within the prison service is a challenging, demanding job but one which can be incredibly rewarding, assisting prisoners for whom even just a little help could have lifelong benefits. It’s not for everyone, of course: engaging with prisoners can involve listening to case histories of almost unbearable cruelty, and the settings can be intimidating at best. But for those with the ability and sense of calling required, a career of genuinely making a difference lies ahead. In fact it will take you at least a decade – perhaps much more – of dedicated training, not to mention all the financial costs of a medical degree and further study. However, once at last you’ve reached your goal you will be involved on a daily basis in activities that can literally make the difference between life and death; your endeavours will help save lives and keep families together – and, of course, should prove immensely financially rewarding at the same time.
